I went to a time managment work shop over at ASU West. I saw a flyer on my way to the gym and I wanted to go. I wasn't sure what more I could get help with but I decided to take a shot (plus the location was in the Devil's Den and Jamba Juice).
I came back from Tempe and rushed over. I was surprised to see only two other people. One person was from the Otaku Club while the other was someone from the Disability Center (the group that hosted the work shop). I thought there would be more people but the location of the room was small.
One of the activities we did was to try and find as many numbers as we can in ascending order. The paper had all these numbers in different areas. I quickly tried to circle as many as I could but I quickly found a pattern. Next, we did the same exercise only we had the fold the paper into four quadrants (what a weird word ;D). I was correct about the pattern I found.
Another activity we did was think about the little moments we do before we go to our destinations, such as a dental appointment. A lot of people forget about the time it takes to walk from the house to the car and then from the car to the office or classroom. We were handed some time managment schedules and had color highlighters!
One reason why people have time managment problems is that time is abstract, not concrete. Rather than think about the time between waking up and going to class, we should work backwords and think about class first and then to the time when we wake up.
When prioritizing, make a list of things from most important to least important. Categorize tasks in things that MUST be done, SHOULD be done, and WANT to be done. It's easy to know about class, group work, and appointments, but we forget about other important stuff like sleep, eating, and exercise. Need to make sure we have plenty of that. We should also be sure to know the concequences for each task if we choose to put it off til tomorrow.
So, when making a schedule, it's important to keep boundaries. Too much time/too little time will cause us to be late for stuff and not be in control. One example we were given is to schedule time to study after midnight or Friday and Saturday nights. There's not point in assigning them if we are just going to goof off or have our brain shut down. Also, there is no point in studying after midnight since every three hours is more like one hour worth of study after that late.
I was also told that undergraduates will gain 20lbs, grad students will gain 30lbs, and medical students obtain 40lbs. That's a lot of weight! Guess it's cuz it's all about convienence. Tis why I get up the same time and try and make lunch. On the plus side my body doesn't like fast food as much but the down side is that I'm still addicted to Jamba Juice. Guess I'll need to try more of the Natural and All Fruit category and away from Classics. Maybe I should stop with the Original (unless I'm at West) and go with 16 oz.
