The smoke had taken a while to penetrate the heavy old doors that shut the basement laundry away from the rest of the dorm building, and by the time it finally reached a smoke alarm that actually worked the blaze was firmly ensconced. What had started as a small electrical fire was rapidly spreading, lapping hungrily at the coils of wires at the

...well, maybe the ghost was waiting for him. And maybe it would stop being a blurry fragment of motion. Maybe it would gain eyes and a feeling of presence, like the Uchiha ghosts that sometimes dotted his trip along the underground rail of the subway line.
The thick grey slab of sky had dumped more snow. He huddled in his winter coat and shouldered his briefcase's carrying strap. The campus was misted out under cold clouds, the snow dirtied with tracks along the path he followed. Upstairs in his room, he replaced his books on their shelf. The sudden blare of sound was like a crash cymbal.
He twitched, his shoulders hunching.
It was the damn fire alarm, he realized. And this was a sadistic joke on the part of the headmistress, unannounced fire drills. While it was fucking cold out, he noted grumpily. And while he was just due to go eat something. He wanted to play with his echo samples, not shiver outside. And he was hungry. And then he saw the smoke.

She started running and as she got closer to the dorms she heard the fire alarms. Her eyes widened as she saw flames licking at the side of the school coming from the basement, smoke was curling into the sky and her mind raced. First she was infinitely glad that Sasuke moved the kittens to Obito’s house and then she realized that HER baby was still inside. Then it hit her that no one else was outside, which meant they were still inside.
It was hard to even think of calming down but she did her best. She knew, first and foremost that in the case of the fire you were supposed to get out and not go back in for anything, in any circumstance. Though she was known for her intelligence it just so happened that comment didn’t include common sense and she dashed back into the school. She needed to save her baby!!!!
Her shoes pounded on the stairs as she rushed up three flights of stairs and into her room letting the door slam opened. Moving quickly over to her bed she grabbed her violin case, relieved as she felt the weight of her instrument inside. It was only when she turned to evacuate the room she spotted Sasuke standing by the bookshelf. “Sasuke… what are you still doing in here!? You know the school is on FIRE right?!”

He paused, his hand going instinctively to his pocket. He looked from the smoke, to her. Yes, of course the building was on fire. He glowered.
"I'm deciding." he muttered. Meaning, of course, which of his instruments could be saved. He pictured complicated insurance forms he'd read cover to cover and then signed, but there were some things he didn't want to replace. He couldn't. He walked past her, stepped over some mess of girl things that probably belonged to the loud blond girl Ino, and hefted a large black zip case from the closet. His favorite set of hammered brass cymbals.
Anything else? He shifted them under his arm. Right- drumsticks. They weere more complicated than they looked, and he had his favorite pair. They were not interchangeable, he thought grumpily. "We need to get out of here quickly," he added, tucking a few other small percussion devices into his briefcase. "The fire must be on the other side of the building. The stairs weren't on fire when I arrived."
Fortunately most of his synths were at Obito's house, as were the cats. He eyed her violin case. Did she need help carrying that?
"Naruto will probably be trying to save his guitars." he muttered, almost to himself. Outside, the wail of fire trucks was drawing closer.

Closing her eyes as he moved over to the closet Sakura tilted her head back, this was all too much. She was finally starting to feel the heat from the blaze and it was making her more nervous by the second, maybe she shouldn’t have come back in. Inner Sakura muttered that she was damn stupid for doing this, because unlike a violin (even though this one was special) she couldn’t be replaced. The logic made sense, but Sakura had never been well trained at making ‘in the moment’ decisions.
Midterms... Sakura wondered if they were cancelled as she stared up at the ceiling as Sasuke wandered around the room as if there wasn't a raging fire underneath them. She'd studied for days in preparation. How annoying would it be if they cancelled midterms!? It'd probably happen. She looked back over at Sasuke who was staring at her, holding the things he wanted to bring. Of course they needed to get out... "I already said that five minutes ago Sasuke. I came up the side stairs; we can probably go back down that way." By the end of her suggestion she was already halfway out the dorm door. In the future she would listen to what the firefighters said and buy one of those roll-up escape ladders for predicaments exactly like this one.
As she made her way down the hallway and back down the stairs she heard Sasuke mention Naruto under his breath. She hadn’t even thought for a second about him and she immediately felt awful, she came running back into the school for her one instrument. People like Naruto... how was he going to get all of his guitars out? And Tenten? And Haku? She prayed that all of her friends got out safely as she pushed the door opened to outside the cold air hitting her face and the snow crunching underneath her feet. She took a deep breath and the dry air made her throat sting, “Sasuke? Are you alright?” Is Naruto?
