Finally she disentangled herself from her table, straightened her shoulders and glided towards the stage, face completely composed with the quiet pride that was expected for such a situation. She’d talk to Kurenai afterwards, there was no point to making a scene now. She winked at Zaku as she took her designated place beside him in the lineup and forced herself to focus on Kurenai’s continuing announcements rather than her racing thoughts. She really did not want to spend the next few weeks pretending to be Zaku’s lover for a few hours today, she didn’t want to learn to dance with him, she didn’t want to deal with the pretend death of her pretend lover in front of a very real audience. Her heart was throbbing, tripping and flip flopping in her chest as she ignored it and stood straight, forcing a smile and then pretending to keep from laughing when Anko was pushed onto the stage beside her.
But then Kiba was called as Tony and Temari was washed with real happiness for a second, finally casting that made sense! Temari applauded and whistled for him, punching him (lightly) on the arm as congratulations when he bounded on to the stage.
And then Haku was called and suddenly Temari was completely and utterly sure: this production was going to be the death of her. And there was no way in hell she’d be able to bail on the role and let her friends try to struggle through it alone.
