ADA White Paper Update by SEGD
In 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) established the first guideline standards for building and local codes for environmental graphic designers and architects. Since then the original regulations have been rewritten and, to some, made more complex and restrictive. In 2003 the rules were revised. And in 2006 the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) published an ADA White Paper Update to clarify existing rules; these included guidelines and recommendations on “Typography for the Blind,” “Position of Text and Braille on Signs” and “Innovation,” a discussion of the wayfinding needs of the blind and visually impaired. - ADA suggests sans-serif typefaces as opposed to the serif styles that often have very thin areas within letterforms;
- exterior signage should be positioned perpendicular to the path of travel due to the disabilities of the peripheral vision and limitations of the head movement;
- visual contrast between the actual type and the surface on which it appears should be not less than 70%;
- ADA suggests an increase of 72 points of the type size for every 7.6 meters of viewing distance;
