Aw, you poor thing...!

As an oldster, I can tell you how dentists work from experience and observing others being parted with teeth, cash and nerves:

If you go and show yourself willing, impressionable PLUS able to pay, you've already lost. These people are twisted, cursed souls to begin with. Ever met a dentist privately? No? Just be glad ;-D!

You can either do what you're told, go there every year, maybe even end up with jaw surgery and one of these ultra-white US-tv-smiles - your pain won't be any less. But it will cost you a fortune and make sure you go there even more often because the more you have, the more will reach its inbuilt breakdown all the time.

Or you can try to keep it down by only going in emergencies and then only having "emergency treatment" - say you'll be travelling the next day or something ;-p. That way, you escape all the fancy bits, save yourself lots of trouble (and cash!) in the long run - you'll also keep your own teeth a lot longer. Even if some might end up looking a bit chipped and/or uneven....

There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. Get your inbuilt Ferrari or be happy with - a serviceable old tractor, or something :-p.

Important: If you do catch an infection - switch to a sensible general practitioner! Private-practice dentists are NOT doctors, but more something like fashionistas, nowadays.
If you *must* do anything operative while being infected, try finding a teaching hospital. Not sure about your country, but at least here, they do start out being taught about the human system behind the shiny white fence and the teachers tend to appreciate a botched job for them to fix.....
