“Did they live happily ever after?”
Reno looked down into Jamey’s small face as he closed the storybook and set it on the bedside table. “Who?”
Jamey wiped the back of his hand across his nose, muffling his words slightly. “The King’s bodyguards. You didn’t say they lived happily ever after.”
Reno sighed, and caressed through the boy’s hair. “I don’t know, Jamey.” He nudged him playfully. “What do you think?”
From the doorway, Zack smiled. Reno was so good with the kid. Jamey was Reno’s cousin, pretty much his only relative of note, and Reno was hard put not to spoil him. But even so, Reno was going to make a really great father one day.
Jamey’s voice was meek, a little shaky around the edges. “I…hope they do, but…in most stories the bodyguards die.”
Scooting closer to the little boy, Reno wrapped an arm around him and pulled him against his side. “Jamey, do you know what sacrifice means?”
“No.”
“It means being willing to give up anything, to do anything, to win. You see, the King’s guards, they know what they’re fighting for. They want freedom and justice just like everyone else, but getting those things isn’t their job. Their job is to protect the King, because without him, everything falls apart.”
“So they’re important?”
Reno smiled softly. “They’re very important. The bodyguards are the King’s best friends. The King trusts them; he knows that they’ll always take care of him, so he doesn’t have to be afraid of anything anymore.”
Jamey seemed to ponder this, then, “So they make the King happy and safe?”
“Yes, and in return, the King makes sure that their families are taken care of, so that whatever happens, his loyal guards will always know that their families will be okay.”
“…Reno, what happens to the King if one of his guards die?”
“Well,” Reno tugged Jamey into his lap, “the King would be very sad. And he would have a giant feast so that all the people would know how brave the guard had been and would remember him.”
“Would that make the guard happy?”
Reno leaned down and kissed the boy’s hair. “Yes, Jamey,” he whispered, “I think it would. But you know what, I think the bodyguard would be happier about what he’d done, than the way people would remember him.”
“What do you mean?”
“He did his job. He protected the King. And even though he died, he died knowing that everything would be okay. His world would continue, his family would be safe, all because of what he’d done. Because he’d been willing to do anything for the King he loved so much.”
“Even die.”
“Yes, even die.”
From the doorway, Zack swallowed hard. It was all so surreal hearing Reno speak of his lifestyle like that, soft and honest and childlike. With a five-year-old who understood it-accepted it-far better than Zack. Reno could die any day. And Zack would be left alone. But the world would continue. And Zack would…
“What about the bodyguard’s boyfriend?”
Reno looked up and caught Zack’s eyes. “Well, the bodyguard’s boyfriend would carry his lost lover in his heart. He would always remember him. And he would always love him. And maybe one day, he’ll find another beautiful friend to love, and be happy again.”
Zack swallowed again, and nodded. This is what Reno wanted from him, what he needed to be sure of. That Zack would move on, and be okay.
Reno gave him a soft smile. “And you know what happens then, Jamey?”
“What?”
“At the end of time, when there are no more Kings to protect, they’ll meet again. And this time, they’ll be together forever.”
The End.
