6:00 am Saturday:
A: Mom, the pain is too much!!
Can you wait a little longer?
A: I have.
Take a Lortab.
A: I did.
Dr. Olsen? I'm sorry to wake you...
Meet me in my office at 7:30.
A: Did he say why it would be so long?
The details:
Andy's bottom 2 front teeth have been bothering him all week, ibuprofen has helped, but his patience has been worn thin. He called me at Roy as soon as he got off the bus at Weber at 7:00 am on Friday morning and said it was now sheer pain. I suggested ibuprofen and to call me in an hour. He didn't call. I called Lana and she thought he was fine, he hadn't mentioned anything. I told her to have him call when he got out of class. He did and said that they, the teeth, were moving and touching the back of the upper teeth, which they have never done before.
I started calling dentists. Herr Jackson covered class. Did you know that Dentists don't work on Friday? Finally found one, who for a $150 after hours cash fee which would not go toward any work he would possibly do, to help Andy out. He was going to find an assistant and call me back. I explained that later was better because I was in Roy, Andy at Weber and then we'd have to get to Bountiful. He said ok and I didn't here back from him for a few hours. When he called at 12:30, he informed me that we were to meet him at 1:00. That is an impossibility. We agreed on 1:15, but his assistant had a time restraint and we'd better be there at exactly 1:15. I assured him that we would be if we didn't die in an accident on the way. I literally said that!
I had Mr. J. take over the lesson and I ran. I called Andy at work, Carol, the boss, said she thought he had left, but found him. I told him I was on my way. He said there was no way he could leave until he was done with dishes. He didn't have an option. As I got closer to Weber, I called back and asked Carol about him going to an emergency dentist appointment and she said there is no way he can leave them in such a mess! I said I could bring him back right after his appointment. She became quite firm and told me this was his working hours and no, he was not leaving. I cancelled the dentist.
Just as I was parked and heading in to the building, Andy called and said he was done. This was about 10 minutes after Carol said he was not leaving. First she thought he had already gone, then she talked about the mess he had to clean up, and then he was done 10 or 15 minutes later?
I told him it was cancelled. "WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" He was hurting. Lana was so upset, she told me to always ask for her!! She could have finished up the dishes.
Lana tried to call 2 dentists she knew personally, but no one was available. I finally got one on his cell/emergency #. Though I could hardly understand his English, he explained the nerve had probably finally died, these 2 teeth were seriously chipped about 8 years ago. He said it can take that long for the tooth to decide if it will live or die. He said he would meet us at 4:30 if we couldn't find anyone in Bountiful. No $150 charge either.
We headed to Bountiful, giving Amber, Johnny and Brad a ride too. Johnny suggested we call his dentist because he works on Fridays. What do kids know about their dentists schedule? His dentist was off, but his office open!!!! Dr. O. works in the graduate program at the U and works Fridays in Dr. K's office for is therapy. We went straight there and he drilled and drained an very abscessed tooth!! He thought of leaving it open, there is little blood supply to the area of the lower front teeth and it is difficult to get them to settle down. It drained so well, that he decided to close it to avoid the risk of bacteria getting in there. He gave us his home phone # and said there was a 50/50 chance of us getting together on Saturday.
It's 6:45, I suppose I ought to get in the shower.
Poor Andy :-(
