Early morning, April 4
A shot rings out in the Memphis sky
"Free at last!"
They took your life
They could not take your pride
U2, Pride in the Name of Love
In the US, January 16 is Dr Martin Luther King Jnr Day.
I haven't really been able to listen to U2 since 2007. If the man was all about shining light into dark places, bringing forgiveness where there is hate and reconciliation where there is hurt, now is an excellent time to spin the record.
In memory of the late Reverend Doctor and all of the faithful and activists who made his work possible.
In forgiveness of the man who found the message so intolerable he murdered one of the Twentieth Century's greatest heroes.
In thanks to U2 for celebrating and eulogising Dr King so well.
Lastly, Soli Deo gloria, the ultimate thanks and honour go to Christ whose example Dr King and countless others have followed, whose Spirit inspires and empowers the sort of nonviolent love revolutions we still see today.
Rest in peace, Dr King:
Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realised
If thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Rain down on me
So let it be
So let it be
Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realised
If thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Let it rain
Rain on him
