For whatever it's worth, this journal is friends-only. I have my reasons. I'm generally quite friendly in my distant, aloof, reserved way, though I sometimes have the fannish trait of disagreeing with you just to be polite and friendly. (Take heart: If I'm arguing with you it means I feel comfortable enough, and trustful enough, with you to argue with you. I argue with people I love, because it's with people I'm willing to love that I talk about the things I care enough about to argue over.) I work in a psych ward and my journal is kind of like my job, interesting here and there, much more boring than you probably expect, with short bursts of unbearable excitement scattered through long stretches of walking around doing checks and occasional excursions into areas that are rather difficult to puzzle out.

If you want to join the fun ... er, that's to say, if you want to be able to read what I've written in here, please feel free to friend me and write a (screened) comment below. I'd like a short, reasonably coherent note about where you saw me and why you were interested enough to add me. This is not because I'm some kind of elitist, exclusionary snob. I am elitist and exclusionary, of course -- I like intelligent, articulate people who do what they do for reasons that they can at least begin to explain, even if I don't agree with the reasons -- but that's not why I ask this. I can distinguish idiots from intelligent people just fine (generally), and the distinction is not that intelligent people always agree with me. No, I ask this only to filter out bots and spam artists and data miners and suchlike. If you're interested enough to pursue an online relationship with me, you can do at least this much. Tell me anything you like. Let yourself go and tell the truth; it's not a job application. The freer you feel the better I like it.

For reference: My native language is English, and I'm fluent in that. I can both read and reply, reasonably well, in Russian and Spanish; but if what I'm saying is important enough to me to be sure I get it right I will revert to English. I can at least read German, French, Italian, Latin, and Portuguese, though I can't claim the ability to correspond in them. I enjoy puzzling out Greek, even if I don't do it very well. 133+$p3K3 is right out, as is chatspeak of the "lol dude ur teh funny" variety. (Unless you're playing it for effect.)
