I have the same issue with spending money, which I think derives from not knowing how much I'm supposed to be saving. I've been contemplating getting an ipod/ipod touch for about two months now. It took me 4 months to buy a kitchen cart.

I've found in order to make a purchase that doesn't give me pangs of guilt every 10 seconds, is to really plan out what I want. For example, with furniture think of size, color, material, shape, how much you're willing to spend, I mean really get into detail. Then start comparison shopping, and remember that thrift stores are cool, but RARELY have anything that wasn't designed before the 70s. Definitely stalk Craigs list (you can actually do a refined search, then get the results as an RSS feed and automatically get updates using Google Reader or some such RSS reader). It might be picky - but when you DO find something you love, and at the right price, you wont regret spending money on it.

Also, there's an IKEA an hour away from Middletown. Granted it's in NJ, but that store is figgen awesome.
