The child was gone.

Golbez wasn't exactly sure when that happened, but she wiped out his dragon without much more than a smirk. It was more annoying than impressive.

He did feel kindred towards her from that moment on. They were both powerful black mages, though her power was more dangerous than his. Her power centered on anger, wrath. Rydia wasn't smooth like Golbez when she cast her spells. He cast effortlessly, confidently. She cast out of fury. Sometimes he swore he saw boiling hatred roiling beneath the color of her pretty eyes. It drained her, but the stronger she got the more she could cast. While he could mimic her spells, he couldn't cause nearly as much damage as she could.

She leveled her entire village with one summon when she was still a babe, and that stemmed from righteous fury.

She had a lifetime to dwell on the tragedy. That was what fueled her magic. Golbez had no such motivation. In the end, she would prove to be the better mage - not because she was more skilled, but because her emotions were a catalyst.
