Dwayne McDuffie - 1962-2011

Feb 23, 2011 20:22

It was announced yesterday that Dwayne McDuffie died.

I was at work in a particularly boring situation when I saw the news on Twitter. My heart immediately sank. I did not know Mr. McDuffie personally, but I knew his work well.

I think he's best known for being a co-founder of Milestone Media, which produced a lot of great comics featuring a large range of diverse characters. Milestone brought minority characters into the spotlight, effectively tossing away many stereotypes. There was a misconception amongst some fanboy groups in the 90's that if you weren't African American, then you couldn't appreciate Milestone's books. I'm here to say that's absolutely not true; the stories were interesting and accessible to everyone. To this day I can still pick up an issue of Hardware, Static or Icon and enjoy it.

Particular favorites outside of Milestone were Damage Control, Deathlok and Beyond!, but interestingly enough my real favorite of Dwayne's work took place in animation. He was instrumental in one of the greatest TV shows ever, Justice League and its extension, Justice League Unlimited.

I hate that I never got the chance to tell him how much I loved his worked, but the consolation for me is that I can always enjoy it. Mr. McDuffie, thanks to your excellent body of work, you'll never be forgotten!

Anyone interested in what else he's worked on can check out his Wikipedia page or personal site.
