He loves her.
He has loved her since the first day he saw her, when he came into the class and was told to sit next to her. If this was a fairy tale, she would love him too. And they would live happily ever after. But that's not going to happen. Real life doesn't work like that.
He thinks that she likes him, but he honestly can't believe that she loves him. As for living happily ever after, they're in a ruined terrorist base on an island in the middle of nowhere. And they're being targeted by governments of more countries that he knows the names of.
Happily ever after doesn't seem to apply to them.
Still, she likes him more than she did at the start of this trip -and that is most definitely a good thing- so maybe he still has a chance. Besides, he wants her to be happy. Preferably with him, but he'll settle for a friendship.
She yawns and rests her head on his shoulder, in unconscious imitation of his action earlier, and he smiles and wraps an arm around her to steady her. Maybe things are looking up. He wouldn't quite bet on a happily ever after yet, but it's still an improvement.

He has a choice to make.
He's not discussed it with his comrades, and he's not sure that they'll agree with what he wants to do. He knows that if he gets enough time to explain to them, he can make them understand why he can do this. Why he should do it. After all, they weren't planning to go after Nanahara just yet, and he's not the only one of them looking at a professional career. And all of them got better grades on their final exams than they were expecting, so he can realistically get away with it.
There's a letter on his table. The letter. The one that started this dilemma off. It's offering him something that he likes the idea of. It's a course that looks interesting, for the most part. There's even a module on modern and contemporary military history -which made him smile when he read that part of the syllabus- but there's a catch.
The catch is that this particular course is the result of a collaboration between two departments of the same university. One of them is the History department, the other -for some reason- is the Education department. And when he finishes the course, he'll be found work experience in a school. Not only that, but he'll have an official teaching qualification.
He'll be a fucking teacher.
And he's not sure that he's ready for the responsibility of a group of students. Especially if -and this was a big if, but he's always been the one to see the glass half empty- his class get put into the BR Act. Can he deal with that?
But he's interested in the course.
He reaches over to his phone, and calls up the friend that's most likely to listen to his proposal.
"Hey. Yes, it's me. I've got a problem. There's this course that I want to do, only I'm not sure how Kurosawa's going to take it. Which course is it? It's a History course. Yes, of course there's a catch. The catch is that it's also a teaching course."
There's a pause, and then the person on the other side of the call starts laughing.
"Yeah, I'm glad it amuses you. Anyway...Jo, stop laughing, I need to ask you a question. That's better. If I wanted to convince Kurosawa that it's a good idea, how would I go about it?"
He picks up a pen and starts making notes. Some of them might be really helpful. He'll phone up his other two allies first to see if they have anything to add to the list before making his next move. He knows that this might be taking it a little far, but he should always be prepared for the worst. After all, he was the one with the slight military obsession.
He's the one that's supposed to look at tactics.

He thinks that it's his fault.
This is something that Haruya is not prepared to admit to anyone, but he feels guilty for Masami's death. He knows that he shouldn't -after all, he's not the person that killed him- but sometimes, when he's alone, he thinks that if he had held his ground in the tunnel and not let Masami walk in front of him, maybe he would still be here.
He wonders if Saki felt like this. His sister, willing to die so that she wouldn't have to live with all of that guilt on her conscience. She had actually been able to pull the trigger and shoot someone that she cared about, in order to save herself. And her boyfriend hadn't been the last person that she had killed. He'd seen her shoot members of his class without batting an eyelid.
He'd seen her shoot his friends without caring.
And now she was dead too, and he was the last member of his family alive. She hadn't been able to forgive herself and move on, so she died. He's not sure, but he thinks that -with time and some patience- he can live with himself.
He thinks that might be what Masami wanted him to do.

For all that Shikanotoride is rumoured to be a place to hold the people too young to be sent to a real prison, Masami doesn't think that it's too bad looking. A little prison like, perhaps, but no more than the last school that he was expelled from. About all that's really different is the faces and the simple fact that it's a boarding school, meaning that he might actually have to room with a person he can't beat in a knife-fight.
The person that he's supposed to be rooming with -he thinks that his name's Sakurai, but he's not sure because he wasn't listening when the teacher introduced them- doesn't look like the volatile type. He doesn't seem to be a sadistic psychopath either -although he did notice that there were a few in the class.
His luck has paid off again. And maybe, just maybe, he can actually find some friends in this place. After all, this is the last rung on the educational ladder. If he manages -and he's heard it was almost impossible, but he might be able to pull it off because he is just that awesome- to get himself expelled from this place, there's nowhere else that he can go.
This is his last chance to make friends and live a happy and normal life. So he has to be careful not to screw it up. But, equally so, he has to be himself to make friends, since he's not the kind of person that can keep a false persona going for very long. He's too direct for that kind of thing.
Maybe he could start with his roommate. From what he saw, the kid wavered between being painfully shy when it came to people that he didn't know, and cheerful (but still quiet) with his friends. If he could charm him -and Masami had a good feeling about it, so he probably could- then he'd have a friend. Maybe afterwards, he could try and become more friendly with the other people in the class, but for now, one friend would be enough.
It was more than he usually had, anyway.
