St. Lucia & Barbados

Feb 05, 2004 23:47

These islands in the West Indies form the southern part of the Antilles chain. St Lucia is volcanic in origin. It is mountainous and thickly forested, with a tropical climate. Barbados, the most easterly island in the West Indies, is flat with a mild climate. It is devastated by hurricanes from time to time. The coral rock of which it formed makes good agricultural land. The islands' people are mostly descended from African slaves. Others are of mixed African and European origin. Discovered by Christopher Columbus and later European voyagers from the 1490's onward, the islands were colonized by European planters. Barbados was British from 1628 to 1966, when it became independent. St. Lucia was British from 1814 until it gained its independence in 1979.
