The 2020 Christmas memo

Ed. note: This is the Christmas memo going out in my Christmas cards this year. If you're not on my IRL friends list -- or even if you are -- please accept my Merriest Christmakwanzukkah holiday greetings, and enjoy my year in review.

What I did on my Covid vacation
by Brad Beam, age 46

I hope that 2020 found you well and leaves you in the same condition.

Before going on "vacation," Chad and I visited Cleveland for his Christmas present: a Marshall/WVU basketball doubleheader where they didn’t play each other. It was much more enjoyable, at least for me.

In February, work was SO difficult, as I was dispatched to San Diego for a week of jurisdictional meetings. Despite being that close to Tijuana, my idea of nightlife merely consisted of several basketball games - including the nationally-ranked San Diego State Aztecs, who clinched their umpteenth conference title in my presence. (By the way, SDSU: Bold move, putting the arena’s concession stands outside.)

Then we ALL went on "vacation."

At first, my office started alternate-week crews, allowing me to burn excess annual leave, which the state doesn’t allow to be carried over, in lieu of “working” from home. (Accountants are not allowed to take their work home because of the $$$.) Eventually, my co-workers and I returned to the office under cover of mouth and/or face.

Meanwhile, Chad hid out at the house (which he seemingly does anyway), except he curtailed his weekend excursions to Capitol Street for several months.

But we did manage to sneak out on a vacation-within-a-“vacation” to the eastern half of the Dakotas in August, long before they became a Covid cesspool. (In case you’re wondering, our Mount Rushmore visit was SO last century.)

As for Dad, he’s been ladder-free for over a year now, and we couldn’t be more thankful.

Be careful and remember - wear a mask and keep away from me.

*Maybe I should have blogged my San Diego trip (Feb 10-14), but who really wants to hear about DMV stuff?
