The deep south: day 7 (8/19)

FLORENCE KY - The return trip to the airport was much less fraught than the previous one. We had cleaned out the rental car yesterday, so we were free to just hop in the car this morning and head back toward Destin.

Since our flight was leaving just after noon, I sprung for lunch at the airport gift shop. Not the most budget-friendly option, to be sure, but for a numbers guy like me, the exactly-$13 purchase (tax included) and the tuna sandwich was satisfying.

After picking up my car in the Hilton lot, we drove to our regularly-scheduled Cincinnati airport-area hotel in Florence. While the humidity had dropped from what we had experienced down south, the air temperature more than made up for the discomfort.

We lazed in the room for a couple hours, and then headed into Covington for dinner at Hofbräuhaus for some authentic German food before the Reds game.

In my subconscious effect to convert Chad to a Pirates fan, I had forgotten that the Reds’ river shuttle was not wheelchair-friendly on either the Kentucky (stairs) or Ohio (steep incline to street level) shore - and Cincinnati lost to San Diego 3-2. (However, our cousin Michael - a Reds fan from his time at the University of Kentucky - did get a Facebook-delivered birthday greeting from the mascots, Mr & Mrs Redleg.)
