BURLINGTON NC (8/24) - Fortunately, I awoke today to no further surprises. So after my new (temporary) regimen of pills and eye drops, it was a short drive north to Raleigh.
First, Chad got the lay of the land at Carter-Finley Stadium, the site of Marshall’s game on September 9. Due to a map-app error, I missed the campus garage I intended to park in and instead we ended up walking over hill and vale to the historic Reynolds Coliseum. (There was a tunnel which short-cut under the railroad track, but there were stairs.)
We then had lunch at the student union next door; I had a sub and Chad had a slice of pizza. I then brought the car around to load Chad up, only to slowly back in to a dumpster. (No damage there.)
Our Tobacco Road travels then took us to Chapel Hill, where we sussed out UNC’s athletic facilities, including Kenan Stadium and the (again) historic Carmichael Arena. I once again brought the car around to pick Chad up and then it was on to our hotel.
For what I paid, our Red Roof-ed room was quite spacious. Chad had plenty of pivot room in his wheelchair, which had been lacking to varying degrees in other rooms.
We chilled out for several hours until dinner beckoned. Chad’s suggestion from Trip Advisor -
Zack’s Hot Dogs - had good value for its meals, although I was sent scurrying when I discovered that it was a cash-only joint.
With still some 40 minutes to go before the game, we opted to swing back by the hotel fridge to drop off Chad’s topped-off drink.
The hometown Royals were playing our home-state (Princeton) Rays, and once Chad saw the steep ramps on the original part of the stadium and the large motorized wheelchair partially blocking the top of the ramp on the newer bleachers, he opted to watch from ground level next to the Burlington dugout. I was satisfied where I was, and he was in my sights the whole time.
