Day 3 (5/30): On the trail of the Kings

May 30, 2017 23:45

JACKSON TN -- We started off a busy day by hitting the Arkansas State campus for Chad's requisite college t-shirt. We then pointed southeast for Memphis.

Over the weekend, the city suffered severe wind storms, with trees blown down and traffic lights knocked out. The evidence was still there today, and God bless Memphians for knowing what to do at a knocked-out traffic light. (Treat it as a four-way stop, duh.)

I was most impressed with the downtown area. Everything we wanted to see was within walking distance -- including the FedExForum (home of the Grizzlies), the Hotel Peabody (home of the the ducks, and AutoZone Park (home of the Redbirds) -- so we were fortunate to find a centrally-located parking garage with a $10 daily charge. Chad wasn't so fortunate when he realized that there was no elevator and he had to go down the ramp. (I ended up waiting for him in the alley behind the parking building to pick him up.)

The Redbirds continued our home-team futility on this trip, as they lost to Iowa 3-1.

After quick drive-by views of the Lorraine Motel (where MLK was shot) and Graceland, we were off to our second game of the day in Jackson, about 90 minutes away.

Outside the city, the on-and-off rains followed us along I-40, resulting in skyrocketed humidity once I unloaded the car at the motel. The rains continued, delaying the start of the Jackson Generals' game by over 90 minutes.

Once the game started at 7:39, the game plodded along, with Jackson not taking advantage of four Mississippi errors, losing to the Braves 6-4 in a 3½-hour slog.
