May Daze: Day 1

MARTINSBURG -- Our second mini-trip of the year started us off south to go north. (Truth be told, from Charleston to Martinsburg it's a negligible difference between going up 79 then east, and 64 then north.) We stopped off in Lewisburg for lunch, totally blanking that our stepbrother and his family live there, and ignorantly eating lunch by ourselves at the Stardust Café.

Chad was feeling a little unsure about one of the tires on his wheelchair, so on the way back to the car he stopped in a bike shop -- which is apparently customary for situations such as his. Whatever he needed done, though, couldn't be done there so we returned to the road.

Having audited several times in Martinsburg, I was familiar with both hotels and restaurants in the area. So that's why we stopped off south of town at a great home-cooking place simply called The Dining Room, and stayed at the Holiday Inn north of town.

Despite it being Memorial Day weekend, the wind-aided weather made it feel more like Easter weekend (or perhaps even earlier). It was bad enough chasing Chad's wheelchair in the hotel parking lot; watching a baseball game in nearby Hagerstown as the sun went down sent actual shivers down our spines. We may have had jackets, but the only gloves were on the field.

Of course, Chad being Chad, he knew somebody -- specifically, one of Hagerstown's catchers, who had graduated from Marshall and is from Hurricane -- and we ended up with seats behind home plate. Thanks, Thor. (Is that his real name? Or does his mom like Chris Hemsworth?) Hagerstown defeated Lexington, 6-0.
