TOP OF UTAH
SLC -- Despite starting the day in Ogden, we hadn't hit our northernmost site. That belonged to the campus of
Utah State University, which sits atop a hill overlooking Logan.
That hill caused a minor fit as we headed for the campus' parking garage. We stopped at the stop sign at the peak, but the cross street was gravel, causing us to spin our wheels until we stabilized.
Of trivial note is USU's football field, officially titled Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. Yes, that
Merlin Olsen, but not that Romney. Instead, that name belongs to USU's all-time winningest football coach (and distant Mitt-cousin) Dick Romney.
We returned to SLC, stopping first at the state capitol. As wide as its first floor is, its Senate (29 members) and House (75) chambers are seemingly small by comparison.
Our hotel for the weekend, the
Hyatt Place, was wonderfully located. The Shops at Gateway were across the street, providing us with great restaurant selections and a movieplex. The light-rail stop was a block away -- adjacent to the Utah Jazz's arena -- providing us easy access to the rest of town.
Hopping on the light rail to the ballpark, we watched Salt Lake's Bees play the Tacoma Rainiers. The home team won 7-4, thanks in no small part to a wild pitch in the process of an intentional walk.
I convinced Chad to ditch the fireworks -- which he did willingly -- freeing me up to catch Spider Man back at the Gateway complex. This Peter Parker seemed a bit snarky for my case, but hey, they still have my $8.75.
