DEATH VALLEY DAZE
The morning started off with a nod to the hot-dog eating contest cross-country. The Luxor food court had a Nathan's Hot Dogs, whose breakfast bar gave me scrambled eggs and Chad some pancakes.
We then trekked out to Death Valley, despite
stories of rogue GPSs leading people astray in the valley. But we didn't worry, because halfway there, Alice chimed that her battery was low. After checking Chad's cellphone charger, we determined the GPS cord was at fault. So we winged it to the Visitors' Center, and then to Badwater, North America's lowpoint.
Surprisingly, it started to rain on the return trip, reducing temperatures even further -- under 90! -- and caused us to dash to a strip mall in Pahrump for lunch and a visit to Radio Shack. (Of note: we ate
Port of Subs. According to their napkins, they're in their 40th year, serving freshly-sliced ingredients unlike that other place.)
Finally, for only the second time in the team's history, the Las Vegas baseball club hosted a 4th of July game. The 51s (as in "Area...") took on Tucson and played to a
3-1 loss in front of 11,026.
