End of the 48, Day 6

SPOKANE (7/9) -- The first part of today wasn't much to speak of. It was a long haul over the new Oregon Trail (I-84) out from Boise. By lunch, we had reached Walla Walla -- or as the locals call it -- W2.

I let Chad pick our lunch site via WallaWalla.org, and he came up with the Sweet Basil Pizzeria. Ultimately, he was impressed with the build-your-own calzone, though I went with two slices of the Saturday special: Mediterranean.

After a side trip along the Columbia River Valley to the Tri-Cities (specifically, Pasco; sorry, Richland and Kennewick), we turned northeast and headed back to Spokane.

Once we dropped off our luggage at our hotel, we headed for the historic, first-ever outdoor arena-football game -- or, as most people would call it, football. The hometown Shock were taking on the Utah Blaze for the final playoff spot in the National Conference, with two more games remaining. After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Shock started to pull away, with a 14-point halftime lead ultimately ending in a 76-49 victory. Next weekend, the Shock (8-8) clinch the final playoff spot with a home win over San José (7-9) and a Tulsa loss (7-9) to Orlando (9-7). Otherwise, keep up with ArenaFootball.com, I guess.

And of course -- of course -- Chad knew somebody on the Shock Dance Squad.
