Movie diary: Who wants to be a slumdog?

F5:05 Slumdog Millionaire
Great Escape Theatres, Cross Lanes

Okay, first off: if you want to sneak in from downtown amid all the rush-hour traffic heading west, either pick a later start or get on the interstate earlier. I got to the light at the bottom of the hill to get to the mall, and waited literally 10 minutes to turn up the hill. So I missed the trailers -- big whoop -- but I'm not sure how much of the start of the movie I missed.

For the actual game-show portions of the film, I didn't know anything until they got to the upper-level questions (e.g., "Who is on the American $100 bill?"). But man, if ABC lawyers are as bad as Indian authorities if they think you're cheating on a game show, look out.

It is fortunate for narrative's sake that his experiences match the questions he's asked in a chronological order. I was more surprised that, in a country of 1.1 billion, starcrossed low-income lovers can lose and find themselves three times. (Although, the third time's charm: young Jamal does use a call-center database to find his brother and girlfriend. This may be the only good use for such a database.)

And while there's no surprise that Jamal wins the Rs.20,000,000 (rupees), let's remember that it's only about $410,000.
