It wasn't today.
It was the late '80s.
I was in junior high -- either 7th or 8th grade; I can't recall -- when Jeff Roach was elected student body president. (Now that I think about it, it must've been 7th; his sister Anitra was in our class.)
While my junior high wasn't inner-city, one of the neighborhoods would be considered a minority 'hood. So, as far as I could recall, there was no hue and cry over Jeff being elected. In fact, it was a tie for homecoming queen in 9th grade that caused more of a controversy.
So to folks like Archie Bunker -- who expected God to give us a black pope in preparation for a black president -- it's going to be okay.
