[character]: Bobby Singer
[character history / background]:

TL;DR: Bobby's a hunter, mechanic, and an old friend of the Winchesters. He became a hunter after his wife was possessed and died at his hand and he met the Winchester family when the boys were young. He quickly became a fixture in their lives, only bowing out after a skirmish with John while Sam was in college. When the boys are stumped, Bobby's who they call for information, back-up, or a place to crash. He's a blue-collar, steak and potatoes Giles to Sam and Dean's Buffy.

[character abilities]:
Average human strength and tolerances.
Knows weaponry (arcane and other) and car mechanics.
Large knowledge of the arcane with a specialty in demonology.

[character personality]:
Bobby can be pretty grouchy when faced with incompetence, but he's loyal and steadfast. As a hunter, he's very guarded and cynical, especially with strangers. He enjoys a good joke, though, and will let his guard down around those he trusts - after verifying they're not possessed or anything.

He has vast knowledge, but at this point in canon he's beginning to realize that there are things that are way above his pay grade and since it's all aimed at the Winchesters, it's probably not sitting too well. He is, however, a research machine and if he doesn't already know it, you can be damn sure he knows where to look or what to summon to find it. He won't take no for an answer, but is smart enough not to go tilting at windmills, he'll just look for a way to blow them up or get around them. He takes a certain amount of pride in his skills, but doesn't flout it.

He is very loyal to, and protective of, Sam and Dean Winchester, and considers them like his own sons. He's known them most of their lives. Their father, John, was a dear friend (for all that he was a pain in the ass) and is sorely missed. Of course, loving the boys in no way diminishes his eternal irritation at the stupid crap they do, nor prevents him from calling them on all of it - loudly and often. He's always there when they need him, but he's acutely aware that there are some, or rather a lot, of things they have to work out themselves.

But for all of his vast knowledge of the Winchester clan, he's very guarded about his own life (much to fandom's dismay). He doesn't like talking about himself and is adept at keeping it that way.

In a fight, he prefers preparation and entrapment to physical confrontation, but that's not to say he'll shy away from a fight.

[point in timeline you're picking your character from]:
Post "Sex and Violence" Dean's been to hell and back (though we're unsure if Bobby knows what happened there), and he knows Sam's been hangin' with Ruby.
