My Chucks appeal to me because people can spill beer all over them at parties and it doesn't make me upset. After all, they are "old school" and therefore considered even more fashionable and "legit" when they are incredibly dirty. Plus, I got mine in Seattle, which gives me even more "street cred," since Seattle is the birthplace of the "grunge" movement, which Chucks are a symbol of. I believe people can sense this about my shoes, and that's why I get compliments about them. This, in turn, makes me feel good, and wear the shoes again when I know I will be around drunk people who will compliment my shoes and then spill drinks on them.

But really, it's because they used to be "subversive" and "punk", and therefore cool, and people still associate them with that quality of coolness, and want to possess it. Kind of like how the Clash was still a good band even after they sold out to the record companies, though the point was kind of ruined.

I have no idea why Chuck Taylor liked them for basketball. I would pull all the muscles in my feet and get blisters if I wore them for intense physical activity. But that might also have to do with the fact that I got mine when I was 15, and they are a bit too small. And I have high arches.
