Raise your goblet of rock

Ok, so the first gig had some *technical difficulties* of pretty big proportions. First of all, there were no monitors. For people who don't know anything about live music, monitors are the small angled speakers that you see onstage that face the performers. You might think, "How come they don't just listen to the music coming out of hte loud speakers that we're listening to?" The only problem is, the loud speakers pointed out to the audience so that the brunt of the music goes out to the audience. from the stage, you can't hear a damn thing. So, you use monitors so that you hear how loud each person is, and adjust accordingly. Additionally, if the singer cannot hear him/herself, generally the singer will sing off pitch. This is bad. So, none of us could hear ourselves, so sometimes I was too loud, sometimes Adam was too loud, and then other times Fawzi was rushing through songs because he couldn't hear everything. On top of this, Sean didn't mic his drums, so you couldn't hear them very well out in the audience.

As if that wasn't enough, I didn't realize that my Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face wasn't on. The fuzz face provides all of my distortion, which is what gives my tone some depth and more importantly sustain, grit, and flexibility. Without the fuzz face, vibratos don't last near as long, bends aren't as dramatic, and it's literally impossible to get my signature scream out of the guitar. So, I didn't realize that it wasn't on until the very last part of our second to last song. At that point, I hit the switch and took off playing my end solo. It still wasn't enough to salvage the song, or really even the set, but the last song went well. Overall, it was a lackluster show.

On a constructive note, we realized that we don't move around nearly enough, so we're going to work on that on Wednesday. My favorite moves: Looking to heaven, Fist of power, I can't believe what my hands are doing, and the Boogie (all taken from my "How to Air Guitar" book that Jeremy gave me) Hopefully we will incorporate some electrifying movements into our set to make it a really high energy show.

Either way, blah.
