Why Do I Write?

Apr 05, 2004 17:25

Here's a piece I wrote a while back, when contemplating why I like to write. This i believe will mark the first time I've publicly posted any poetry (aside from haiku), since I always figured online poetry was rather trite, especially spilled out onto one's LiveJournal. But, I guess my need to share overtakes my humility, so here's why I write. (Opinions are appreciated, I suppose):

What sound escapes from my lips?
What effect can it possibly bring?
Once a sentence slips past
Ears and thought
It doesn't mean a thing.
Oration is masturbation
A soothing solace for a short time
Then it fades away
Decays
And so I write
Alliterative lines for figurative times
A blur of words clouded by a hazy mind
An expression of confusion
The details in allusion
From a timid voice
Too scared
To speak
Two lines.

Wanting to express more
Than stuttered speech can attest
The words transcribed
Revised
Sorted and laid to rest
Frantically scribbled prose
Fleshed out and revamped
Into the perfect thought
The perfect phrase
The perfect line
Then stamped
Signed, sealed, delivered
Anonymously viewed
Read by many or few
Sometimes for everyone
But this time
Only
for
you.
