SixTONES
Jesse’s abs
Working out at every free moment, reassessing his diet and controlling it meticulously.
Stoically and diligently…
The six-pack that Jesse attained in earnest.
Jesse’s really slimmed down.
It looks like he’s planning something.
It’s finally time to reveal the full story of his challenge that had the fans speculating on social media.
From our magazine’s offer, he spent his efforts on controlling his diet and working out over approximately 10 weeks, and completely changed his body line and attained defined abs. A stoic six-pack, plus a chiselled torso with accentuated exterior obliques and serratus anterior.
「It was at the end of last year when I was told “an offer has come from ‘Tarzan’, what do you want to do?” by my manager. There are fans who say that they like my squishiness, and I don’t have the character of being a total gym-nut either, but I thought it wasn’t a bad time to have an image change so I replied “I’ll do it!” immediately. It’d be great if I betray expectations in a good way, and gain new fans too.」
Trimming away excess fat, he lost 12kg. He’s originally an athletic person, and his performance excelled even more through the training. During the photoshoot, he executed pull-ups and hanging leg raises one after the other. Even when using the battle ropes, his core muscles were unshaken by the load of the long and heavy ropes.
Jesse’s body transformation started from reassessing his diet.
He’s not a picker eater so he stores fat easily around his belly if he’s not careful. Apparently he’s eaten heavy abura soba and chuuka ryouri [Chinese food] after enjoying a few drinks.
「No matter how much I exercise, I won’t get abs if I don’t get rid of my excess fat. That’s why I sought advice from a nutritionist; in addition to reducing my alcohol intake bit by bit, I gradually cut out carbohydrates like noodles and rice. It’s unsustainable if I change everything at once, so I swapped things out one by one, and ultimately switched to a diet of salad and chicken. I was able to eat my salad and chicken impassively while glancing at my members eating the hitsumabushi from the catering deliciously.」
What he kept up alongside that, was resistance training.
He would go to the gym every second day, and continued to work not only on his core, but the muscle groups all over his body.
「The gym is open till late at night, so I could go after work too. On days when I don’t think I’ll have time at night, I’ll go before work in the morning instead. Going into the sauna after my training session is my routine. I couldn’t even withstand 3 minutes at first, but I decided to stay longer so I could release more sweat and shape up even further, so I set myself a goal of staying inside for 12 minutes each time. I also did ab workouts in the sauna sometimes (laughs).」
He also worked out when he had the time at home.
「I trained using the dumbbells that my friend gifted me. It’s convenient that I can change the weight with the press of a button. I don’t have a (training) bench, so I’d lie on the floor with my hips raised to do dumbbell presses, or ball up a blanket and lean it against the back of my sofa to do bicep curls. If you put in a little effort, then you can find plenty of hints for working out. Even when you’re not actively exercising, it’s effective if you stand on your toes when you’re in the shower. When you’re playing online games, you can lie down and move your legs like you’re riding a bicycle until it’s your turn - all of that was beneficial towards shaping up my torso. Even if you’re busy, you should be able to change your body if you utilise your spare time well.」
Initially, he suffered from the muscle aches, experiencing acute pain whenever he’d cough or sneeze. But despite that, he was able to continue and not slack off because he noticed a positive change.
「People say that in life, there are efforts that aren’t rewarded. But, that’s absolutely not true for training. You will definitely see results for the work that you put in. When you realise that properly, that pain will transform into joy. Even when the workouts are hard, when I check my body after I’m done and see my abs slowly gaining definition, the corners of my mouth naturally go up.」
Enjoying the pain. The reason behind that lies in his experience of being a troupe leader for the first time in the stage play “Standing Ovation” in 2021.
「Everything was foreign to me so it was demanding to complete all 34 performances. But, I grew during that period, so even if it’s the same play, I could clearly feel myself showing a different performance every time. With working out too, I felt like I met a different side of myself with each session. After I came to enjoy that, I didn’t think it was painful or tough anymore.」
His biggest encouragement, was the presence of his members by his side.
「When we’re all checking the monitors after a magazine or TV shoot, they’d tell me things like “you’ve lost quite a bit of weight”, “you worked hard on losing weight didn’t you. I respect that”. That simply made me happy and it motivated me to work hard. Taiga’s also started working out, so when we touch each other’s muscles to check on our progress, the other members would look at us coldly (laughs). I too would tell Kouchi, who loves to snack, to “eat properly and work out”. In SixTONES, there aren’t any members who panic and start exercising just because another is exercising. But, the mindset might change if even one other person starts working out in the group. I think that’ll bring a positive chemical reaction to us. I hope this challenge of mine will give everyone the push [to start working out].」
He’s slimmed down as much as possible. However, it doesn’t look like his zeal has abated. What body is he aiming to achieve next?
「I can still shape up more, but I’d like to grab a hamburger or some ramen after so long (laughs). I’ll ease up on my diet a little, and I expect to rebound because of that. I plan to move into a phase of watching my diet while also bulking up my muscles. But as I’m an idol, I’ll be careful to not bulk up too much!」
