6 Player’s Cinema Life
This month’s photoshoot is one scene from their favourite movies. The 6 made a 180° change into the characters. We asked them about the reason for choosing that movie, what the first movie they watched was and about their cinema life♪

● I chose “Four Minutes” for the theme because I liked the feel of the DVD’s cover. It’s of the female prisoner protagonist standing next to the piano with her hands cuffed, and that’s what came to mind when I thought about what theme to choose. If I remember correctly, this work was recommended to me by my Western Culture professor in class. I can’t remember the story very well to be honest, but the scene of the heroine performing with her soul really left an impression. It was powerful and cool!
● I’ve had less chances lately, but there were times where I watched 3 movies in a day at the cinemas before. I’d eat dinner between the 2nd and 3rd movie… my schedule was something like that. I generally go to the cinemas alone and I don’t have a particular favourite seat. I choose from the areas with less people, so my seating is always all over the place. When there’re only seats available in the front and I think “this is going to hurt my neck…”, I’d prioritise my desire to watch it and go to the front anyway. There’s no single genre that I can pinpoint as my favourite, but I do watch a lot of human drama genres. For example “Fune wo Amu”. I also liked “HALFWAY” (2009) which depicted the growth of the characters through love.
● When I watch movies as fertiliser for myself, I will try to imagine the script directions from the actor’s acting. It’s similar to learning a dance by watching it I guess. No one has taught me about acting, so I can only fumble through it. That’s why I’m clinging on for dear life by using films from all around the world as reference material! There was a period where I watched rom-coms in preparation for “Liar × Liar”. After watching a fair few, I got super worried and thought, “what am I going to do?!”. There are plenty of ways to perform it, but I thought I shouldn’t follow the usual pattern. Even when I was watching the other works, there were lots of times where I thought that the actors must’ve been in conflict over that too. I yelled out “I don’t get it anymoreeee!” at home (laughs).

● My family likes Disney, so we often went to the movies together. The first movie I watched at the cinemas, was probably a Disney movie. There’s “Lion King”, “Toy Story”… but “Aladdin” which I chose out of my many favourites comes in at first or second, and was something that I watched countless times as a kid, and I went to watch the live action at the cinemas myself too. The scene that excites me the most is when Aladdin dresses up as Prince Ali with his parade. I thought “I wanna ride on a huge elephant and parade around too!!”. And of course, its hugest charm has got to be the music and dancing. For someone like me who can’t sit still, being able to watch Disney movies excitedly is one of the reasons they’re my favourite. Of course, I need to be careful to not bother others around me in the cinema!
● Other than Disney movies, I think I watch more Japanese ones than foreign films. The reason being that I can understand their conversations just from listening. I can’t watch a movie continuously for 2 and a half hours or something even when I’m at home; I go to the kitchen in between or do something else. It’s more like I’m listening rather than watching the movie at this point (laughs). That’s why the volume is always booming loud. Some people may say I could just watch the dubbed version for foreign movies then, but it has to be subtitled because I want to experience the film’s original mood. That’s why I often get lost about the story midway. I usually search up about it online after watching it, but since I’m quite the observant type, I find that I made quite the correct inferences! I just might be a genius.
● I’m easily affected, so it’s common that I catch onto the character’s speech pattern or accent. If I find their clothes attractive, I’d style myself in something similar the next day. When I was in middle school, I looked up to Oguri Shun-san who played the protagonist Takiya Genji in “Crows ZERO”, and I got an undercut and wore jerseys too. I spent those days thinking “I’m Oguri Shun!”.

● When I was casually scrolling through movies on streaming sites, a film that I found was “Us” and I chose that as my theme. I always read the synopsis and watch the trailer before I watch a movie, and the content of those alone was enough to pique my interest. The story is about a family getting attacked by their identical doppelgangers. The unexpected development is thrilling and a “oh I see!” ending awaits at the end. I love suspense stories that tie everything together at the end, and I often watch [such movies] alone or with friends. It’s fun to hear each other’s opinions after watching the movie right♪ However, getting spoiled before watching it is a definite no-no. There are people who are absolutely fine with that, but I’m totally the type who wants to go in with zero knowledge. When I’m watching it with friends, even horror movies are exciting. In my case, I get a fright when there’s a loud sound or if a ghost suddenly appears, so I watch with my eyes half shut when I think “it’s coming!” (laughs).
● The first movie I watched was “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” for Western films and “Spirited Away” for Japanese films. If I’m correct, I think I went to watch both with Mommy. In “Harry Potter”, the scene where the black smoke billowed and came closer to me was so scary that I cried. With “Spirited Away”, I was around 5 years old then, and although I didn’t really understand the story, I bought the pamphlet on the way out. I liked to flick through it when I was bored or tired from studying. Also, I remember watching “Spiderman” for the first time when I was young. I thought I could become him and always offered myself to get bitten when I found a spider (laughs).
● I have a chosen spot for when I go to the cinemas and it’s the very back. I’ll buy popcorn as well of course. When I watch something after eating lunch, I’ll order coffee instead of the popcorn as dessert. I haven’t been able to visit the cinemas lately due to the current circumstances, so I set up a projector at home. It feels more real than watching on the TV and you get to experience a somewhat adult feel so I recommend it!

● I’m the type who’s charmed by antagonist roles rather than the hero in the first place; the Joker in “The Dark Knight” isn’t a particularly formidable adversary nor a cool one, but he’s a character that displays humanity’s ugliness on the forefront. That captivated me and I tried to challenge that this time. I’ve watched it countless times and became a fan of the Joker through this production and watched Joaquin Phoenix’s version of “Joker” as well. Other than that, I’ve always like American comic movies and watched things like “Batman”, “Spiderman” and “Deadpool” a lot. There was a time where I bought a rifle toy because of “Terminator” as well. I remember when I tried to copy the way that Schwarzenegger spun and fired his shots, I smashed the table at my grandmother’s place and got into loads of trouble (laughs).
● I’m the type who likes to savour watching movies alone. If I go with someone, it gets strangely awkward when the light goes back on and there’s this feeling that you have to say something right? (laughs). I want to linger in that world a little more but I’d have to think about things like getting up and out quickly if I’m with a friend. Shimekake (Ryuuya) wants to watch things together and he invites me often though (laughs). I guess I usually get the aisle seats in the block just behind the middle section. I have a weak bladder so I don’t like to bother people if I was sitting in the middle of the row. I’ll get popcorn as well. I’ll eat continuously for 2 hours like a robot. I don’t usually drink carbonated drinks, but I’m in the mood for coke or melon soda when I go to the movies. Choosing the things that I like and putting them on the tray like it’s my table is fun!
● I watch “Meitantei Conan” DVDs at home on my days off the whooole day. It’s basically my tranquiliser. Watching Conan is the only time where I don’t need to think, so I let it play like it’s background music. I remember most of the lines too, so it’s at a pretty disgusting level (laughs). I want to go and watch “Meitantei Conan Hiiro no Dangan” too when everything settles down!

● The “Pirates of the Caribbean” series excites me to no end and it’s funny too! Men admire pirates after all. The setting is detailed and charming. I like it so much that I check out the making footage too, so I think I’m pretty knowledgeable on this production. The lead Johnny Depp’s characterisation is amazing! I think his unsteady walking in the film is memorable, but it’s because he’s so used to the sea that he can’t walk properly on land. So, he can walk normally on the ship. I liked Johnny Depp because of this movie. How he approached his role and how he expressed the eccentricity in his own way is great, and it prompted me to watch his other works too. Staying true to his own style is cool.
● I prefer [watching] at home rather than the cinemas for movies. I don’t recall going to the movies alone, I’m usually invited by my friends. I tend to sit in the typical smack bang middle. And, the pair of seats at the side is also relaxing. But I haven’t been these past few years~ The last thing I watched in the cinemas was probably “Deadpool 2”. But I do like the food at the cinemas and I’ll sometimes just buy the popcorn or churros and leave! Popcorn has a lot of flavours lately, so I choose different flavours like butter-soy. When I went to buy churros the other day, it was coincidentally around the release of “Liar × Liar”, and there were lots of girls lining up for the goods which made it a little awkward (laughs).
● I love everything from romance to horror movies, and I choose the movies that I want to watch by the cast. For example, I got obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio through “Inception”, and immediately watched “The Wolf of Wall Street” afterwards. And then I realised that I hadn’t actually watched “Titanic” properly and watched that too. I try to buy the DVDs of the movies I like, and I watch it multiple times regularly like putting it on when I’m eating with my friends. You don’t get sick of it no matter how many times you watch it when it’s something you like isn’t it~

● In “Titanic”, the scene where Leonardo DiCaprio sketches Kate Winslet was so beautiful that it left an impression on me even as a kid. That lone drawing comes up in the beginning of the movie, but it moved me to see that it linked to this scene here. DiCaprio is really cool too and I tried to become that. I’ve watched it time and time again, but it’s a great movie every time I watch it. I get excited no matter how many times I see the opening when DiCaprio wins the bet and gets the tickets before rushing onto the boat!
● My first “movie-going alone” was Oizumi Yo-sam’s “Tantei wa BAR ni iru”. I was a highschooler if I remember correctly. I was by myself and bored, and just happened to walk past - I remember walking into the cinemas with my heart thumping too (laughs). But ever since then, I felt like I was able to concentrate on the movie more when I was alone, and until corona, I would go to the movies by myself once every 2 months. I can’t relax when someone’s next to me, so my seat is usually one by the wall at the side in the back right. I don’t buy popcorn when I’m alone, and settle for a drink only like hot milk tea or something. I’m the type to watch movies through to the ending credits. I loved the NG scenes they would show in the credits in Jackie Chan movies too. Besides, there are times where there’s a huge reveal at the very very end right? That’s why I think the people who actually leave before the credits finish are brave (laughs).
● I watched a few movies on DVDs and streaming sites during the stay home period. I would search with keywords like “funny movies” or “emotional movies”, depending on my mood that day and choose from the results. The movie “Focus” where Will Smith plays a genius conman was refreshing and fun. And about movies that I like, they’d be director Shinkai Makoto’s animes. I watched “Your Name” and “Weathering with You” twice, as well as all his other works too. There’s the beauty of the illustrations, but I like the unexpected twists too!

Six minutes as a pair!!
#6 Hokuto & Shintarou
With the time limit of 6 minutes, they’ll be talking about the things they like however much they want ♪ Boke & tsukkomi [funny man & straight man], enjoy the conversation that’s just like stand-up!!
Hokuto: For Shintarou, do you have something that’s “this is my highest trending topic lately!”?
Shintarou: I do! I’ve decided to be a shimanchu [islander]!
Hokuto: …What do you mean?
Shintarou: I got my diving license a little while back. I stayed at an island for a few days to receive the training, and things like the scenery, the community’s personality and the food; the various things that I came in contact with completely charmed me.
Hokuto: That was quick.
Shintarou: I was totally captivated.
Hokuto: Aren’t you too easy? It only took one go.
Shintarou: Well, so that happened, and I decided to be a shimanchu.
Hokuto: Honestly, so easy! (laughs)
Shintarou: Ehehe.
Hokuto: You, you’re the type to easily change your views if you go to India or somewhere aren’t you.
Shintarou: Yeah (laughs). I’d wrap a turban on my head and say “India’s amazing!! I wanna live here!!”.
Hokuto: So you received the same degree of inspiration from the island which led you to rethink your life plan. But in your case, you would already be changing your mind when you’re at the airport en route.
Shintarou: Gyahahaha!
Hokuto: … In other words, will you fill out “shimanchu” as your field of profession too?
Shintarou: Yup! “Shimanchu cum SixTONES” (smug face).
Hokuto: Hmm that’s going to be problematic for us (laughs). It’ll affect your actual job.
Shintarou: I have plans to be like that eventually.
Hokuto: Well anyway, from that perspective, I’m thinking of becoming a doumin [someone who lives in Hokkaido].
Shintarou: Eh! Hokkaido?!
Hokuto: Yeah.
Shintarou: Why?
Hokuto: Because Oizumi (Yo)-san likes it.
Shintarou: Sheesh, you’re basically like me then! My reason was essentially cos I like the sea.
Hokuto: But in my case, I have almost never been to Hokkaido.
Shintarou: It’s okay. It was basically my first time to visit that island [that I fell in love with] too.
Hokuto: Ahahaha! I’ve only been to Hokkaido for my school trip and our concert the other day.
Shintarou: Since we’re in these circumstances, we couldn’t even go sightseeing…
Hokuto: But I do know quite a bit about Hokkaido. I researched heaps on the internet!
Shintarou: I also checked on rentals on the island immediately. There were lots of good places♪
Hokuto: You’re moving too fast. Say that you’ll live on that island eventually, did you feel like the air and such matched perfectly with you?
Shintarou: Yeah!
Hokuto: So you felt like “I’m home!”?
Shintarou: No, there were lots of people dressed like me!
Hokuto: That’s a matter of season!
Shintarou: They were all wearing sandals and shorts like me though?
Hokuto: That’s because that sort of fashion is the typical style for shimanchu right?
Shintarou: They were all tanned too… (←desperately trying to find common factors)
Hokuto: So it’s a city filled with tanned people wearing sandals. You’re the one who’s copying them isn’t it (laughs).
Shintarou: Ah! I also felt that they were all living through their feelings!
Hokuto: You can’t know that much just from staying there for a few days (laughs).
Shintarou: Hmm, but I felt like it had the same feel as me. In any case, I’ve made up my mind!
Hokuto: I’ve also made up my mind that I’ll be a doumin.
Shintarou: Oh, that’s nice♪
Hokuto: We have 3 managers for our group, so if anything happens, we can easily split it into the Tokyo-group, Hokkaido-group and island-group.
Shintarou: Then when we have a job, it’ll be fine if Hokuto and I get a plane ticket and go to Tokyo.
Hokuto: Yes. The travel time between North and South is probably around the same too (laughs).
Shintarou: Ahaha! True!
Hokuto: And so, today’s crosstalk was a lazy chat between people who wanted to become a shimanchu and doumin~ (laughs).

>>> Mystery #5
A while ago, there was a person who invited me suddenly on the day at dinnertime with “I’m going to a restaurant that Kyomoto Taiga likes, do you want to come along?”. Usually it’d be a bother if you invite people so suddenly right? And in reality, I had dinner plans with Shimekake (Ryuuya) already. That restaurant is one of the culprit’s favourites and I’ve had a meal with them alone there before, and it was so delicious that I became a fan too! So I really wanted to go that day, and even thought about bringing Shimekake and the others along too… Now, who’s the culprit who invited me so suddenly? It’ll be obvious if I tell you how he calls me, so I purposely said it as “Kyomoto Taiga”!
