Author: 6_pack_apathy
Pairing: Mikey/Ray

Summary: Mikey and Gerard's best friend, Ray, start to fall for each other after Mikey comes out of the closet. Just as the two decide it's time to tell Gerard, the pig-bombs begin to fall. They put their feelings aside in exchange for survival and head west for the great Battery City. It isn't until years later, when they're on the run as the Fabulous Killjoys, that their feelings resurface.
Warnings: Swearing, drinking, sex, probably some violence
A/N: Originally this was a standalone but it just kept getting bigger and bigger so I decided to split it up for your reading pleasure. Enjoy!

Mikey was always Gerard’s kid-brother to Ray. He was the cool kid who made lots of friends even though he had glasses. He was the weird kid who geeked out over Star Wars and was always game for a round of Dungeons & Dragons (but only if he could be a warlock with a gay familiar named Frank, since the boy of the same name always refused to play). He was the awesome kid who would come pick up Ray and Gerard from the bars in the middle of the night when they spent their cab money on one more round. He was the life saving (and not to mention credit saving) kid who, instead of saving up his money from work like he’d planned, moved into an apartment with Ray and Gerard when their third roommate bailed unexpectedly.

So, yeah, Mikey was a pretty awesome and totally off-limits guy - not that Ray was thinking about that or anything. Or at least, not that Ray meant to be thinking about it.

After Mikey had ditched the glasses and finally saved up enough money for eye surgery, Ray had started to notice his best friend’s kid-brother a little bit more. When he slipped up and mumbled, “damn, when did Mikey start looking so good?” Gerard had given his friend a swift punch to the arm and a sharp glare. Okay, boundaries tested. Kid-brothers were not allowed. Got it.

It wasn’t until one day when Ray was running to the laundromat and Mikey asked if he could throw some of his stuff in with Ray’s clothes that a fleeting interest became a major crush.

Not that Mikey had slipped anything too scandalous into Ray’s dirty hamper or something like that - the three men had seen each other in every state of dress for long enough that nothing could surprise Ray any more. Not after Gerard went through that brief stint in college where he thought wearing a banana hammock would attract the ladies. No, it was when Ray came back with both of their clothes neatly folded and ready to be put away that things took a turn.

Gerard had left for work and Mikey was in class when Ray returned so he figured he’d just be a good roommate and put Mikey’s clothes away, not that the younger boy would probably notice - his room was an absolute sty.

Just as Ray was leaving, something caught his eye on Mikey’s bedside table. Maybe it wouldn’t have if it weren’t so familiar but it’s something that Ray still likes to think of as fate. Yeah, it sounds a lot better to think of it as fate that led Ray over to the nightstand where he unearthed a magazine that was more than half hidden under a pile of books than to admit it was perversion.

He saw a twink porn magazine - one that Ray also owned and looked at quite frequently if he was going to be totally honest. Damn, Ray thought, I didn’t even know he was gay… Still shocked and intrigued by the discovery, Ray opened the glossy cover and flipped toward the centerfold. The pages were stuck together.

Bam! Instant hard-on.

“What are you doing?”

Ray spun around and saw Mikey standing in the doorway a straight face that slowly transformed to a mortified one when he saw what his friend was holding.

Bam! Instant boner-killer.

“I, um,” Ray stammered, “I was putting your clothes away…”

“What and decided to do a little light reading while you were at it?” Mikey snapped as he crossed the room in three long strides and snatched the magazine out of Ray’s hands. His face was bright red and despite the fact that his voice sounded angry he still had the same embarrassed expression.

“Look, it’s not a big deal,” Ray started, “I mean, shit, you’ve known I was gay since high school-“

“It is a big deal,” Mikey interrupted while glancing over his shoulder like he was terrified some random stranger may have wandered into the apartment and overheard their exchange. “It is a big deal. To me,” Mikey repeated more calmly, “I haven’t told anybody yet… I’m not even sure if it’s, like, real or, like, just a thing, you know?”

Ray nodded even though, no, he didn’t know. “How long have you felt this way?” He motioned to the now crumpled magazine clutched tightly in Mikey’s hands.

“I don’t know, a few years? Since, like, sophomore year in high school?”

“Then it’s probably not a thing,” Ray snorted. “Honestly, it’s not as big of a deal as you’re making it out to be,” Mikey opened his mouth but before he could say anything Ray raised his arms defensively, “but if you aren’t comfortable being out then it’s whatever. I wont tell a soul,” he saw Mikey start to speak again, “not even Gerard. You know that if you ever need to talk to someone about it you can always come to me, right?”

Mikey softened a little and nodded. “Yeah,” he said then took a step backwards as a signal for Ray to leave. The older man obliged but on his way out Mikey called his name softly, “Ray?”

He turned around and looked at his friend over his shoulder. “Yeah?”

“Thanks.”

That night Ray took out his copy of the same magazine and flipped it open to the centerfold. He’d never cum so hard from jerking off before and knew that it was because he knew Mikey had been done the same thing while looking at the same picture.

Two months later and Ray was in full-fledged crush mode. He must’ve been discreet enough though because Gerard never said anything or, you know, tried to kill him in his sleep.

But, despite the fact that Ray knew and Mikey knew that Ray knew, the incident had never come up again. Ray had even accidentally-on-purpose wandered into Mikey’s room a few times to see if his friend had gotten any new reading material, each try came up with no results or Gerard walking by asking Ray what the fuck he was up to.

Just as Ray was getting ready to give up hope on Mikey ever coming out or at least talking to Ray about it - something happened. The younger Way came home one day from classes yelling very loudly that he needed a drink. This didn’t happen very often, Mikey grew up watching Gerard turn slowly into an alcoholic and tried to avoid going down the same path (that, and he simply couldn’t keep up with his roommates and was sick of getting shit for it).

“So you in?” He asked Ray.

The bushy-haired man didn’t even look up from his phone when he nodded his head.

“Gerard,” Mikey called while slapping the door to his older brother’s room, “you wanna get drunk?”

A faint and muffled “no” came through the doorway. Gerard had been fired from his job two weeks ago and spent the first week drinking himself stupid. Now that he was over being fired, he’d realized that he’d pissed away a lot more money than he should have and couldn’t afford to go out any more if he wanted to make the next month’s rent.

“Alright,” Mikey said while walking to his room. Ray raised his eyes to follow the younger man’s slender figure. “Ray,” Mikey pointed at him, “it’s just you and me tonight.”

A chill went down Ray’s spine.

Okay, so the night did not end with an x-rated fantasy from the darkest depths of Ray’s imagination, but it wasn’t a bad night by any means either. In fact, it was a pretty fucking awesome night.

The two of them went to a side bar down the street and grabbed a quiet booth with an attentive waitress and got down to business. It wasn’t until after the duo’s third pitcher of beer and third round of shots that Ray realized he hadn’t even asked Mikey the question of the evening: “So why are we here?”

“Because,” Mikey slurred, “because the one time I try and be - be spontaneous and myself I get shut down!”

Ray cocked an eyebrow and turned to ask the passing waitress for another pitcher of beer while handing her a five as a preemptive tip.

“I don’t know how you do it,” Mikey continued, “how the fuck do you even know if someone’s gay with all the hipsters and metro-sexuals and bullshit?”

Now he had Ray’s full and undivided attention. “Wait. What?” He leaned his head further across the table to try and hear the younger man better.

“I asked out a guy today!” Mikey practically yelled across the table. “He said no! He - he said he wasn’t fucking gay!”

Ray’s face fell, both because he felt terrible that Mikey’s first try was a failure and because Mikey’s first try wasn’t with him.

Mikey barreled on without noticing the obvious change in his friend’s expression. “I seriously don’t know how you do it,” he repeated. “I mean, I don’t even know any gay guys other than you.”

The waitress came back with their pitcher. Ray leaned back to let her set it on the table and exhaled slowly through his nose as he did. “It’s the same as it is with girls - you’re going to get shot down sometimes if you’re looking for more than just someone to fuck and it is harder for us since there’s a more… narrow scope.” Mikey was frowning at Ray’s response so he quickly tried to end on a lighter note, “just don’t give up! You’re a good looking guy and you’re awesome - I mean, I’d fuck you.”

As soon as that last bit hit the air Ray’s eyes got wide as saucers and so did Mikey’s. Obviously he’d had just a little too much to drink. He hadn’t meant to say that! Oh God, why didn’t real life have an undo button?

But Mikey just laughed it off while saying, “would you really?” He poured himself another glass of beer and took a long drink. “I’m worried anyways, I wouldn’t even know what to do, you know?”

Ray shook his head no and lifted his own glass to his lips while giving Mikey a puzzled look.

“I mean,” the younger man elaborated while holding his drink and sloshing some of the amber liquid over the brim as he brought it to his mouth for another long swallow, “I mean that I don’t know if I’m a top or bottom, I don’t know if I should be worried about condoms, I don’t know if I’m just supposed to be keeping it casual or - or anything!” With that he downed the rest of his beer in a couple quick gulps. “Do a shot with me?”

Ray nodded his head distractedly as he tried to fight off both his drunkenness and previous embarrassment. He truly felt for Mikey - it sucked to be that confused and God knows he’d been there before.

The first year of two of college had been just awful trying to hang out with the gay clique and go to gay bars and care about fashion. Ray had eventually found it much easier to just be himself than try to be what stereotypes and the media told him to be and it would be awesome if Mikey could just skip over the whole painful lesson.

“Listen,” Ray finally said but was cut off as Mikey waved down a waitress and ordered two whiskey shots and then busied himself with refilling his beer. “Listen,” he repeated, “you don’t have to change anything about yourself or what you want out of a relationship just because you’re gay.”

The shots were set down in front of them. Mikey grabbed his and Ray followed suit. “Makes sense,” Mikey mused before raising the shot class to clink with Ray’s. Both of them slammed the glasses on the table then brought them to their lips to drink down quickly.

Ray made a face and immediately followed the shot with a sip of his beer to get the taste out of his mouth. When he looked back up, his friend still had his head tilted back and was just finishing the shot. Ray watched Mikey’s adams apple bob as he swallowed and took a deep breath.

That neck…

“I don’t really know if I want a relationship,” Mikey continued, oblivious to Ray’s stare, “but I wouldn’t want to do anything with someone I don’t trust.” He took a quick gulp of his drink and made a face at the combination of beer and whiskey

That last shot was pushing Ray over the edge, he felt his eyelids weighing down and licked at his chapped lips while his eyes stayed fixated on Mikey’s neck. “You know I could help you out with that.” His tongue felt thick.

“You’d have to be interested to be helpful,” Mikey replied with a laugh that left him with a hard case of the hiccups. “I think we should call it a night, yeah?”

They closed out their tab and started to head down the street to their apartment with an arm slung over each other’s necks.

“You - you said I’d have to be interested…” Ray was slurring and kept stumbling when his legs would accidentally tangle with Mikey’s. The younger man wasn’t fairing much better.

“Yeah,” Mikey said between loud hiccups that smelled of liquor. “It’d be pretty awesome. I know you’re Gerard’s best friend and I’m just, like - like, the fuckin’…” he trailed off. “I’m like the fuckin little brother but, I mean, like, you’re hot! And awesome. And hot.”

“I’m interested, fuck, I’ve been interested!” Ray was going to regret this in the morning, booze always made him start yammering like a fucking idiot. “I almost came in my pants when I found out you were gay!” Yeah, he was going to regret saying that.

Mikey turned his head and tried to plant a wet kiss on Ray’s neck but ended up just making his friend’s hair sticky with saliva. He hiccupped loudly again and broke away as laughter racked his thin body. He pressed his face back against Ray’s bushy hair and inhaled deeply the scent of booze and cigarette smoke. “If you’re interested and I’m interested,” he started to mumble into the older man’s hair, right next to Ray’s ear, “then let’s have some fun. Nothing serious.”

“Let’s see where things go,” Ray drunkenly agreed. If he didn’t have whiskey dick then he would’ve been sporting something extremely inappropriate for a dark New Jersey street. “Casual.”

“Just friends with benefits,” Mikey said as they started to head into the apartment building.

Outside their front door Ray nodded. “Friends with benefits,” he echoed Mikey’s previous statement as if he were testing the sound on his tongue. Ray turned Mikey’s head towards him and planted a sloppy kiss on his friend-with-benefit’s lips.

With a low groan that rumbled in the back of his throat, Mikey started to open his mouth and let his tongue peak out and graze against the tip of Ray’s.

Slowly, he pulled away with a smile. “Let’s just not tell Gerard.”

And even though Ray felt smashed at this point he still remembered Gerard’s face the first time he’d ever made a comment about Mikey. It was a fairly sobering thought. “Yeah, let’s just keep this to ourselves.”
