Since returning from my vacation to Utah, I've written
several pieces critical of
certain religious
practices, which has led one friend to comment that I am "anti-religion." Not at all-though it may seem like it sometimes. I firmly believe that when
religion is used for
good, then it is
good. Yet all too often in today's America, we see religion being pressed into the service of
hatred and
bigotry,
misogyny,
terrorism,
ignorance,
superstition,
right-wing politics,
greed,
militarism, and, less spectacularly but much more pervasively,
the complete abdication of responsibility. And co-opting religion for any of these purposes is especially dangerous because there is no arguing against God.
I'd love to write about my experiences with the good works attributable to American religious groups, and I'm sure they exist-but alas, they get very little notice in the USA these days.
