Yeah, I almost put that in there. The author did talk about Hippocrates and Galen, and their sometimes quirky notions about science. For example, Galen thought that blood crossed the interventricular septum by way of a multitude of tiny, invisible pores.

The current system makes some sense, in that it forces Congress to consider all the issues very carefully before confirming a nomination. In any rational world, an extremist shouldn't make it through the process. (Note: The jury is still out on whether we presently live in a rational world. I'm not keeping my hopes up.)

If the majority of American voters would remove their heads from their own recta for a few moments once in a while, term limits in general wouldn't be necessary. I like the 22nd Amendment, though. FDR was getting some loopy ideas near the end.
