Does anyone out there remember the movie Caddyshack? Pretty silly movie, really, but one that touched my life in an unusual way. At one point, Bill Murray talks about how he once caddied for the Dalai Lama. Naturally, he mangled the pronunciation, so it came out "the Wally Lamma" (with a short a in "Lamma"). At about the same time I saw Caddyshack, the brother and I were nearing high-school graduation, and were undergoing all sorts of legal gauntlet-running associated with the college trust funds that Mom & Dad had set up for us when we were but wee bairns. The financial representative we were working with was named Wally, and had a last name that sounded much like Lamma; and after our first visit with him we referred to him exclusively as the Wally Lamma. Now Mom actually picked it up, but used the correct pronunciation, perhaps not recognizing our Caddyshack-inspired variant. Thus we would hear things like "Remember that you have a meeting with the Dalai Lama after school."
Off to college we eventually went, and all thoughts of the Wally Lamma subsided into the vast inky pool of my subconscious. But just recently they were reawakened by a comment that Terri-ちゃん (
cutiepi314) made. We were discussing, over e-mail, the susceptibility of many (if not most) LiveJournalers to high drama. I've seen the term "drama llama" widely bandied about, as well as several excellent llama-themed icons addressing the topic (although strangely enough, I can't find any to link to right now). Terri-ちゃん made a reference to a particular user (none of you, of course) being a "drama lama," with only one L. At first I assumed it was a typo, for even if I'd only heard the term "drama llama" and had never seen it in print, I'd have assumed the second word referred to the South America mini-camel and not to a leader in Tibetan Buddhism. But then I thought, Hey, why not? Perhaps the concept of LJ drama would be unpalatable to the Dalai Lama, but there's no reason that the llamas should hog all the fun. The concept of the Drama Lama has since grown on me enough that I felt motivated to find a nice, inspirational photo of the Dalai Lama against a Himalayan backdrop and to make the following LJ icon:
As far as I know, this is the first such icon in LiveJournal, though I've probably been scooped. As usual.
Next week, if we're lucky, we might get to go Lama Trekking! It's just like
LLama Trekking, except that Tibetan Buddhist monks carry your equipment and chant at you while you hike in the wilderness. I've heard it's a mind-expanding adventure.
(By the way, it is traditional to capitalize both Ls of llama, as LL was originally considered a single letter in Spanish.)
