Mary Smith, age 77, of Maumee Ohio, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 24, 2005.
Mary was born on July 8, 1928, in Toledo Ohio to A. Gideon and Beatrice Spieker Sr. She attended St. Ursula Academy and graduated in 1946. She went on to study at the University Of Toledo where she obtained her Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Sociology. Mary also received her Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1960.
Mary taught 3rd grade at Little Flower School from 1953-1954. Mary worked for the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation from 1958 to 1985. In 1974 she became a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. Mary was responsible for helping physically and mentally challenged people to become gainfully employed. She worked for the bureau for 27 years and retired as the Area Supervisor for North West Ohio covering 17 counties.
Mary also served as a board member for the Ohio Rehabilitation Association, was the Vice-President of the Ohio Rehabilitation Counseling Association and then President of the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association from 1970-1971. Mary served on the Citizens Committee for Statewide Planning of Rehabilitation Services - Region I. She also formed and supervised the first rehabilitation unit at the former Toledo State Hospital.
Mary was also a member of Barrier-Free Toledo, TARTA Citizens, Republican National Committee, Ohio Civil Service Employment Association, American Personal and Guidance Association, American Rehabilitation Counselors Association, a member of the Presidents Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, Toledo Chapter, Women in Community Service and Zonta, a professional women's service Organization. She was also a member of St. Joan Of Arc Church.
In retirement Mary worked in preparing taxes and was a Vocational expert for the Social Security Administration. Mary enjoyed spending time with her many friends in the breakfast club, cooking and hosting holiday dinners and traveling throughout the world.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Natalie Spieker Cavalear and Sue Hale. She is survived by her loving children, David Smith and Cindy (Tom) Prahl; grandchildren, Andrew Smith, Jennifer and Kristen Prahl; brother, A. Gideon Spieker Jr. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Sunday, August 28, 2005, from 2-8 p.m. Memorial services will begin in the mortuary on Monday, August 29th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a memorial mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joan Of Arc Church. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may take the form of a donation to either St. Ursula Academy, St. Joan Of Arc Church or to the Little Sisters Of The Poor.
