I don't think America would able to realistically support a socialist health system; our demographics are vastly different--over 300 million people vs Canada's ~33 million or so. Services are already being abused. I do worry that degradation of care would occur because of the sheer number of people alone. Our government has blundered enough... social security and medicare are in the toilet. The American people are already being taxed to death. The children of illegal immigrants born on US soil are granted welfare, food stamps and medicaid because they are eligible as US citizens. If anyone wishes to chastise me for a supposed hatred of immigrants: I'm married to an immigrant, so don't bother--it would be moot.
There are people on disability and welfare who spend the tax dollars of hard-working Americans on manicures and pedicures. I'm not joking--I've witnessed it. I am selfish, I am cutthroat. I am tired of America being the world's welfare office. What about me? What about my family? The government has its hand in our back pockets for the "greater good." Food is taken out of my mouth every month to finance the existence of someone else and I receive nothing in return. It doesn't matter that I am not financially well off; but because I am better off than someone else, then I just don't need that money, right? This is a Robin Hood paradigm and I think it's awful. Absolving PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY is NOT okay. If you're on welfare, buy a box of f-ing condoms. So people, if you're all for taxing the rich, why do you think you're ENTITLED to someone else's money? If that isn't selfish, then I don't know what is. I'm not talking about the CEOs paid exorbitant salaries. I'm referring to people who've worked their asses off.
I am in no way condoning the current health system in America. The costs and insurance companies disgust me and I am a cystic who is getting sicker, drowning in bills and preparing to lose my COBRA health insurance in less than a year. I do not qualify for disability. I do not qualify for medicaid. I am too "rich." I am currently unable to work, aside from doing freelance artwork here and there, but because my husband makes 33,000 per year (not a lot in NJ), we have far too much money for me to be eligible for any kind of government aid. I've never been so scared in my life, I'll be honest. My husband recently landed a new job, and if there are no decent benefits, I am SOL. My only option becomes divorcing him to become eligible to receive medicaid benefits. He would be deported to Russia and I'd be alone. But I would have health coverage. Yay?
Someone will always be screwed in the end. Congress is too busy running around with their thumbs up their asses. I don't want a group hug full of rainbows and unicorns. I want serious reform that will not break the back of the American taxpayer even further. Apologies for the novel. I neither rich nor healthy and I'm tired of being portrayed as such because I am deeply concerned about the direction health reform is taking.
