"Charlie?"

"Yeah?" He popped his head into the living room where Julia sat on the couch holding Owen.

"You wanted me to arrange the attic."

"Right."

"So I brought a couple boxes down here to look through."

Charlie still wasn't sure what she was getting at. "Okay."

Julia gave him a big smile. "These are our baby books." She reached down into the box and grabbed a book. "Here's yours."

"Wow," he sat down as he opened to the first page.

"This is so cool. Mom was very dedicated to filling them out." Julia shuffled in the box again. "Here's Owen's book." She opened the cover and frowned. "All that's in here is a story about the day he was born. The rest of it is all blank."

"They died when he was still tiny, Jules," Charlie spoke gently. "We'll have to fill it in for him."

"This is just one of the things in Owen's life that is screwed up because of a drunk driver."

"He has all of us to love him. Sometimes you just have to make the best of what you have." He moved to the sofa beside his sister and gave her a hug. "When you think about it, we Sallingers have more than most. Even after we're all adults, we'll have our table at the restaurant once a week."

"So," Julia sniffled as she turned her attention back to Owen's baby book. "What should we write in first?"

"Mary, would you go get your sister?" Caroline asked politely as Carrie fussed in her arms. Charles was still talking with the pastor, but he'd want to get back to the house as soon as he was done.

"Sure, Ma." Mary disappeared around the side of the church.

Caroline eyed Charles again, hoping he'd get the hint that Carrie wasn't going to behave much longer.

"Laura!" Mary skidded to a stop when she saw her sister playing marbles in the dirt with the boys. "Ma wants you!"

The blue bonneted head looked up and quickly jumped to her feet. Then, she remembered her dress and tried to brush the worst of the dust off.

Upon reaching Mary, she was greeted with, "Why do you have to soil your clothes every Sunday?"

Laura shrugged. "Don't know."

"Ma might have a thing or two to say about it," Mary grumbled as she returned to her mother.
