I heard the snuffling on the monitor and knew that it was going to evolve into a cry if I didn't get in there soon. Weary, I pulled myself out of bed and stumbled down the hall, rubbing the sand from my eyes.

"Hey, Sammy. Shh. Mommy's here."

Picking up the squirming bundle, I moved him to the changing table. "Food's coming, Sammy," I promised him as I gave him a new diaper which proceeded to piss him off even more.

Once he was swaddled in a soft blanket and in my arms, his cries turned to whimpers. I rubbed his back and talked to him softly as we went downstairs.

The television was still on and the cartoon characters were up to their usual antics. On the couch, both John and Dean were sound asleep. Dean was safely cradled in John's arms near the back of the sofa.

Before sitting in the rocking chair, I took the olive blanket from the back and one-handedly spread it over my sleeping family. Dean shifted a little when I kissed his angelic face and John clung to him tighter when he felt the movement.

I quickly popped the bottle into Sammy's mouth before he could wake anyone up. He eagerly sucked on it like he hadn't eaten in a week. We sat down and began rocking. I could smell the scent of baby bath as I snuggled him in closer.

John's snore from across the room caused me to look up. There laid the man, who, after a long day at the garage, still played an energetic game of catch with Dean and fixed supper so I could sleep when the baby did. I was so very lucky to have him as my husband.

Dean had been wanting to go outside all day. We'd managed a short stint in the backyard but then Sammy woke and Dean's time in the sun was abruptly over. I felt bad that Dean wasn't able to enjoy the summer as fully as when he was an only child, but knew that he adored his little brother. As the years passed, Dean wouldn't remember the afternoons cut short. But, he would always have Sammy.

All in all, I had a perfect life. A man who loved his family more than life itself, a wonderful little boy who had the traits of a protective older brother, and a baby boy who wasn't fussy and could easily be calmed with a soft voice or touch.

After Sammy had burped and his eyes slid shut as he laid his head on my shoulder, I closed my eyes and imagined my future. I dreamed of baseball games, graduations and grandchildren running around my home.
