The Changing of The Guard and a passing of an era.

The computer that has served me so well for over eight years has been 'retired' downstairs. The fan had slipped its bearings a while back and makes a loud grating sound, the modem card died earlier this year and even the Firewire wasn't working when I tried it last month. It was constantly crashing and after the last anti-virus update it still managed to catch a virus and its performance has slowed markedly. It has served well. It will still be fired up a couple of times downstairs I'm sure, if only to realise I need a file from it, although I'm sure it's all backed up elsewhere. I was a little sad in shutting it down tonight. Many a late night after work I spent LJing on that computer and it was on that computer that I first came across mrs617. I've edited the Nail Files series on it and there are favourite computer games that I will no longer be able to play now.

But that's computing. My once powerful HyperThreaded Pentium4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM and 320GB HDD has been replaced by a i7 2GHz Quad Core laptop with a half full 4GB RAM and 750GB HDD. Still, I finally got to use my old computer with an LCD monitor (thanks macphile and lkemp) for a few months. I was always going to buy one but never could bring myself to spend the money on it. Probably just as well as I wouldn't be able to use it now. The laptop has an HDMI output so maybe one day I'll bring myself to get an HD television. I still want to get an even grunter desktop with impressive editing capabilities but what I have now is adequate and a new desktop may end up being like the LCD monitor, I'll get around to it when I get around to spending the money.

My trusty printer that I bought around the same time as my old desktop decided to retire itself in sympathy. It wouldn't power up a few days ago so we also have a new printer. I think mrs617 is excited about the wireless printing! I'll have to test it out tomorrow. There's a lot more space available on my computer desk for it now.
