(Continuation from yesterday. Switch in Viewpoint Character, though)

“What are you waiting for, Rinae?” she asked point blank. She knew that she was pushing the issue and that Carinae would eventually become annoyed by it, but they both knew what she was doing to Eric wasn’t right. She just had to get Carinae to do something about it.

“I’ve been busy you know… Work. My hours are rather screwy right now. Emergency medicine… I knew it was going to be difficult, but I think, even, I underestimated it.”

Gretchen shook her head. “You’re making excuses, Rinae. We both know it.”

“I know,” Carinae replied with a heavy sigh. “Like I said, he’s a nice guy. I like him. He can be fun… sometimes… I just… I don’t like him the way he wants me to. I don’t… love him, you know?

“I don’t want to hurt him, and I know that, if I tell him all of this, I will.”

She knew exactly what her friend meant. For all her piss and vinegar, she knew that Carinae was a loving and kind individual. One who would give you the shirt off her back, if she thought it would help you in a difficult situation. She would, however, bitch the entire time that she was cold.

She wouldn’t mean it out of spite, though… She was just that way. Especially, if she knew that it would get a chuckle out of someone. Laughing through a difficult situation was her inherent way of getting through it, and an indication to Gretchen, at least, that she was hurting the most.

“I know, Rinae… but… don’t you think it’s going to hurt him a great deal more the longer you go along without saying anything?”

After all, the man had confided in her about his intentions. He was waiting until the trip to Ireland to propose. She had promised not to tell, though, and it was a promise that she intended to keep.

“He’s just going to keep going along, believing that everything is all right. That the two of you are going along swimmingly… What if he gets into his head that you two would make a fine married couple?” She didn’t say that he planned on it! She hadn’t broken her promise, but she needed to do something to make Carinae think about it at least, didn’t she? She didn’t want to see anyone getting hurt in this situation as much as anyone. They were both wonderful people in her eyes.
