Universal Mind Control?????

Ladies, I’m blaming you all for the mess that is Common’s “Universal Mind Control.”

I’ve listened to this album three times now and all I can do is shake my head. This man had put together two great albums back to back (“Finding Forever” and “Be”) after that train-wreck of an album “Electric Circus.” Well, apparently Common’s feeling himself a little too much and he put out another chunky clunker.

But why do I blame the ladies? Because Common saw how you reacted when he did “Go” and “I Want You”. Yep. He saw his star rise when the girls ran up on him after those songs.

I can’t blame him. But as a fan, it’s sad to see. Common used flow about interesting subject manner. This is the same man who did “I Used To Love H.E.R.”, “The Corner”, “The Sixth Sense”. . . hell the entire “Like Water For Chocolate” album! Now, he’s doing Kanye-Lite work. He’s not even flowing like he used to. Everything is about sex and groupies.

Perhaps this all the real Common coming out. Afterall, I’m not so foolish as not to see the footprints in songs like “A Flim Called (PIMP)”, “Go” as well as a slew of other metaphors the man has used when talking about women. Either way, I’m not impressed.

I will give it this. It’s not BAD . . . I mean I have heard mess in hip-hop that’s completely unlistenable of late. Hell, the title track it at least a cool dance track. Overal the album is at least listenable background music. But I expect more than background music than Common. If this man hadn’t made so much great music over the years then I wouldn’t have such high expectations. It’s like Talib; it’s not that “The Beautiful Struggle” was unlistenable, it was just that the albums “Quality” and “Reflection Eternal” were SO GOOD that you know he’s capable of better.

Sigh. . . . do I need to adjust my MC list again?
