The Atari 5200 SuperSystem, or simply the Atari 5200, is a video game console that was introduced in 1982 by Atari as a replacement for the famous Atari 2600.
So I guess then it was Christmas, 1982. I would have been 4 years old. I remember walking into my parent's bedroom after presents had been opened. It was after dark outside but probably still pretty early in the evening. My extended family (dad's side) was over and I guess we had done the whole family get together thing at our house that year. I was sporting some classy new Night Rider underoos.
(Knight Rider is a popular American television series that ran between September 26, 1982, and August 8, 1986. Underoos are children's cartoon underwear. Underoos is a brand of the Fruit of the Loom company. Some were produced as a costume of a character and others were merely a matching set of briefs and a t-shirt with a logo printed on the shirt.) Thanks again wiki even though you didn't know about the knight rider ones I will let you slide. I mean, we're re-hashing the few vivid memories I have from my childhood here so let's not get into a big fight about it ok?
Anyway, I digress. I had been playing with my cousins for a while who were most likely sporting their own brand new underoos (Adrian had spiderman?) and I was ready to go see what my dad was up to. He and my Uncle Don were sitting on the floor in the bedroom checking out the latest in technology, the Atari 5200. I know the brand name and model because up until I recently gave it over to goodwill it was darkening a corner of my room in my last house. I remember that I really wanted to just be a part of whatever they were doing. It looked like they were having fun but I realized that I didn't exactly know what was going on. It really looked like they were having fun though and I wished that I could participate. I think my dad let me sit in his lap and made some sort of effort to at least show me what was going on.
One of the funniest parts of this now is that my dad would have been 31 in this memory. Just two years older than me today. And who is the dude who really wants the latest video game system right now? That's right. I am scrimping and saving to try and get a Wii. Cool dad. Cool.
End of memory.
