Since my first post, the population of Australia has grown from 20,077,215 to 20,135,558 -that's 58,343 more potential aussie journal readers ! Of these new babies, I suspect my church alone is responsible for at least a few percent. I swear in a couple of years our church will just be a glorified day-care centre swarming with kids with names like Jonah, Israel and Eden, to name just a few of the newborns.
So anyway, this has got me re-thinking of baby names for the new millennium:
Old becomes new: We may well see the names of our grandparents return to favour amongst the younger generations seeking to instil a sense of cultural identity and family tradition within their own new families. I'm tipping the rising popularity of names such as:
Cecil, Maude, Dot, Flo, Beatrice, Bettie and Berryl.
For the more trendy and label-aware young parents wishing to give their children a name with instant appeal and class, I think I can suggest a few names which I'm sure will soon be featuring heavily on our pre-school rolls:
Johnny, Jack, Daniel, Breezer, Bacardi, Stollie, Gin, Shiraz, Malibu and Merlot.
Similarly, I have seen an emergence of names more broadly associated with foods. There's Kevin Bacon, Salmon Rushdie, Frodo Baguette... It's with this love of food and exploration of new and unusual flavours that I suspect new parents may choose names such as:
Camembert, Cardamom, Celery, Creme Brule, Cinnamon & Crackling... and that's only the C's !
Finally, if you've been nursed in your infancy by Television like myself, you are sure to have become familiar with numerical names such as Six and Seven. In fact an episode of the comedy, Seinfeld, involved the character George Castanza passionately defending his wish to reserve such a name for his own future child. I say, why stop with just one digit? I'd like to see number-based names like:
Twelve, One-four-four, four-quarters, Pi, zero-point-nine-recurring, nought, fraction and decimal and denominator, which could be shortened to deci and deno.
More thoughts on names to come… Next week: Why be restricted to letters and/or numbers? Symbols in names: Prince did it, so why can’t you?
