Abez stood outside of Thad’s shop trying to peek in the covered windows. She saw the carriage outside and thought the new owners must be finally moving in. She had been hearing rumors about who would inherit Thad’s estate. The poor man went to the Isle of Mer to find new spices and unusual trinkets sadly never made it back.
Thad had been on the street longer than Abez had been alive. She couldn’t picture not seeing him leaning out of the doorway smiling to everyone that passed by. He had always been popular with everyone in the neighborhood. Everyone was worried about who would inherit his shop.
Rumors had been running wild that his bitch of a sister would get everything. Abez hoped that wasn’t true. She had run into Marguerite a few times and had yet to come away from seeing her without having to fight the urge to slap her.
Abez wondered how many shops on Princess Lane Thad had money invested in. She knew he rightly owned just about half of her shop. Her mother had been sick with the creeping death. She had spent more time caring for her mother than running her shop. Her debts had piled up and she had no one else to turn to. Thad had loaned her a substantial amount to catch up her bills.
She worried that whoever inherited his estate would call in all of Thad’s markers. She hated to think about what that what mean to all of her friends. Thad was always so nice, and would never leave them out on the street. She couldn't say the same for Marguerite. She had a feeling the woman would kick them all off the street and take what she wanted. Abez prayed that Thad would look over them even from the other side, as she rushed back to her shop to assemble the rest of the shopkeepers to decided what they were going to do.
