With This Ring, Moonlight, Josef Kostan/Mick St. John, PG-13 angstytimelord June 11 2011, 16:17:14 UTC
Mick reached into his pocket as he headed down the street towards the penthouse he shared with Josef, his fingers wrapping around the small velvet box hidden there. His heart leaped at the thought of what was in that box, and what it meant for his future.

And Josef's future, as well -- if his lover actually said yes. All he had to do was wait for the right time to ask the question, and then it was all in Josef's hands.

All Josef had to do to make him the happiest man who had ever existed was to say one single word -- one little syllable that would light up Mick's life and fill his heart with so much joy that he couldn't be absolutely sure he could handle it all.

What if he didn't say yes? What if he wasn't ready for a step like marriage? After all, Josef was over four hundred years old, and he'd never even thought about taking that plunge before, not even with a woman who he'd thought he loved.

This was different, Mick told himself firmly. This wasn't a human who wanted to entwine their life with Josef's; there was no possibility of the two of them losing each other if Josef tried to bring his love over to his vampiric existence and, for some reason, it didn't work.

He was already a vampire -- and Josef had been the one to turn him. Yes, he would have eventually reverted to that state once the compound Coraline had used to make him human again broke down in his system, but circumstances had sped up the process.

Josef didn't have to fear that they would lose each other. He didn't have to turn away from this kind of a commitment. He would have no excuses.

The only excuse would be not loving Mick enough -- and Mick knew that wasn't so. He knew how much Josef loved him; he'd known from the moment that Josef had looked into his eyes and whispered "Forgive me" just before his fangs had sunk into Mick's throat.

No, there was absolutely nothing to keep Josef from saying yes. Mick's spirits felt light and buoyant as he made his way through the crowd; he had the first part of what he intended to do over the next few days complete -- he'd gotten the ring.

It was beautiful, just as Josef was. Platinum, onyx, and diamonds -- each element signifying something about the lives they shared, and facets of his lover's personality.

Diamonds for Josef's sparkling effervescence, his love of the life that he led, the energy that had first drawn Mick towards him. Onyx for his dark side, the seductive side that carried an element of danger with it. And platinum for the light and love that he brought to Mick's life.

With this ring, he would ask Josef to marry him, to become united with him not only in their hearts and souls, but in the eyes of the world as well. He had never wanted anything in his life as much as he wanted Josef Kostan to be his husband.

Josef had to say yes, Mick told himself, refusing to countenance any doubt about the matter. They loved each other too much not to take this step; it was inevitable. And it was only right that he should be the one to ask, to go down on bended knee in front of his lover.

He wanted to be the one to ask Josef, rather than the other way around. He wanted to look up at the man he loved with his heart in his eyes, to let Josef know how much he was loved and wanted -- and needed. He wanted to give his heart to Josef unguardedly, openly, for the world to see.

This ring didn't just signify an engagement -- Mick felt that their future was wrapped up within that gleaming circle, a future that he wanted to know was safe and secure.

He was ready, Mick thought, his steps slowing as he approached the front of their building. Now he had to put the second phase of his plans into action, wait for the right moment, and hope with all of his heart that he would get the answer that he so needed to hear.
