Election Day

Nov 04, 2008 07:35

I recently came across a quote by William James which made me think of today’s election.

A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.

That’s not directed at anyone here, but real life where some people from both major political parties have been quite exasperating with their narrow minds. Yes, both parties for different reasons. *sigh* IMO, there’s just no excuse to be uninformed and spewing such knee-jerk negativity. If you know me well, you know I’ve just been smiling and imparting facts nicely and respectfully until there's nothing left to say but their admittance of a prejudicial bias against a race/gender. I won't do the incessant 'my party is better is better than your party' thing, but feel compelled to address the need for 'oh yes, you are an ignorant bigot' discussions. It's a testament to my tolerance level that I'm still friendly with these people. Not friends, but friendly. I am seriously glad the election is finally here and will be over, hopefully by the end of the day.

Another apropos quote by the philosopher, William James:

There is but one unconditional commandment, which is that we should seek incessantly, with fear and trembling, so to vote and to act as to bring about the very largest total universe of good which we can see.

Vote well, America.
