Highway Robbery

~*~

This weekend I just about pissed myself in excitement when I found gas at $3.51/gallon. Regular unleaded gasoline is currently averaging $3.69 in my neck of the woods. This past week it jumped from $3.39 to $3.49 to $3.59 to $3.69 in just a matter of days.

I'm so happy I traded the old minivan (17 mpg) for the Malibu (32 mpg) a few years ago. I'm also thankful I only live .2 mile from work. I live on the same street actually, so walking/biking is an even better option. Even with driving, that short distance makes the cost nominal. Two miles/week for 52 weeks would only require 3.25 gallons of gas so even at $3.69, that would make my annual cost of gas for getting to/from work only $11.99. Thank goodness I didn't take that other job offer a few years back. I could be commuting 100 miles a day compared to my current 100 miles a year. So instead of paying gas costs of $11.99/year to get to work, I could have been paying $3,000/year. That's a sobering thought and yet more positive reinforcement that I made the right decision. This job's flexible hours have been another invaluable benefit given the family medical issues in this past year.

I'm finding GasBuddy to be a helpful resource, especially when traveling in unfamiliar territory, to find the best gas prices.
