I went to donate blood this week. Three phlebotomists and an hour later … success!
junesrose, any advice for those with shy veins? I did drink 76 oz. water before going to donate. The last lady said I had tough veins because she felt it pop when the needle went in (is that good/bad?). I hit a triple for normal vital signs with a temp of 98.6o, blood pressure of 120/80, and 72 pulse.
There’s always that question asking if you’ve been out of the country in the last 3 years which leads to further questioning if you say yes. It was 3 years ago this April when I went to Mexico and ventured off the beaten path to some Mayan ruins which always leads to the Spanish inquisition. The 3 year statute on that trip is up this April but that’s when I’m taking another cruise which means 3 more years of answering yes to that question. I’ve found it goes more smoothly by keeping the pertinent info (dates/locations) with my blood donor card.
The Blood Center only had 2XL in T-shirts, but that’ll be a comfy sleep shirt. I got a little woozy afterwards even though I had a diet Coke and peanut butter snack crackers from the refreshment area. The cakes, cookies, and doughnuts were tempting but I refrained. When I got home I was still a bit weak so I looked for a quick bite of something to eat. I tried some soy nut butter I have in a cabinet for my friend’s kid who has peanut allergies. It wasn’t bad - and it was only 1 carb for 2 tablespoons. That’s why I’ve been using the Peter Pan brand with no sugar added; it‘s low in carbs and tastes great (you know, when it doesn’t have salmonella in it - actually the two suspect jars I ate tasted pretty good, too :P).
My friend and I have both decided to lose some weight before taking that cruise in 7 weeks. She’s doing WW and going for 20 lbs. I’m doing low carb and thinking 15 lbs. might be more attainable for me. I know I can lose 5 - 10 the first two weeks on the induction plan, then try for 1.5 a week for the next 5 weeks. That averages to be 15 lbs. and I think I can do that. I did lose 7 lbs. in January and kept it off in February. I considered that an achievement. Alas, I’m not really goal-oriented. I usually just take what comes along and make the best of it. It’s arguably a positive attribute or a character flaw.
A friend from high school stopped by my office today and was kind enough to remind me our 25 year class reunion will be this year. What!!? I demanded a recount, but he was right. I don’t feel that old … today. Although some days, I most certainly do. :o
*eyes the clock* I feel a Yabba Dabba Doo coming on. This has been the longest week ever. I thought that on Tuesday and I’m convinced of it now. TGIF, indeed.
Hope everyone has a good weekend. :)
