7-12

7. A Prophet. My primary reaction was: god, it goes on a bit. My secondary reaction was: it gets progressively less interesting as it becomes more obvious how conventional and familiar its overall shape is. Some good performances, though.

8. Precious. Irresistable Force meets Immovable Object: The Motion Picture.

9. The Wave. Film of a YA novel of a TV movie of an experiment that's only documented in a couple of minor mentions in a school newspaper: teacher accidentally turns his class into fascists in the space of a week. This obviously strains believability somewhat, and the abbreviatedness shows at points, but if you get past that and treat it as the dramatisation of an idea, it's very good.

10. Princess Mononoke. Very good.

11. Away We Go. A well-written and acted central couple, who get some really lovely moments, surrounded by a bunch of cliches that even Alison Janney and Maggie Gyllenhaal can't really save.

12. Hard Candy. Disconcerting, intense revenge film that's shot like a TV advert of some kind.

Rewatch:

A. Apollo 13. Still smashing.

(Not really a month for up films, it has to be said...)
