Fujitaka looked down at the girl lying silently in the coffin and tried to imagine her laughing, speaking, being alive. He couldn't do it. Whatever brightness she had in her was gone now.
He walked away and left the building soon after, lost in thought. It was always a sad thing when one lost a girl that young. From the wailing of her family, it was easy to see that she had been the favorite. The girl who had been with her at the moment of her death was sobbing just as hard, but there was enough body language for Fujitaka to see she had been exiled for losing the girl. Poor Amamiya-kun. Both of them, of course, but the one girl was in peace now, where her family couldn't be angry at her.
It was strange how life turned, Fujitaka thought. He himself had lost his family at such an early age that he couldn't remember them. Chance makes fools of us all. If he hadn't been late to get up that morning, he could have been walking past that tree and caught that poor girl. Instead, she had fallen and snapped her spine, one more bright youth gone from the world. He'd only be fast enough to be the first teacher on the scene, and the one to call the ambulance, trying not to choke and throw up when the blood began to puddle around her neck.
She had been smiling when she fell, Amamiya-kun had screamed at him hysterically. I told her, I told her, it wasn't safe!!! He had held her until the ambulance came, but she would have nothing to do with him now. He didn't blame her. He understood the horrible psychology behind it.
Fujitaka went home with a heavy heart, that evening dreaming of a beautiful smile that he was quite sure he'd never seen, and an angel falling from the sky. But he didn't remember his dream when he awoke and went on with his life.
